Choosing a cane

Hello everyone.
I am new at this but being age 78 with white hair and not built like a wrestler I decided to buy a cane to take with me when I walk my two dogs.
I decided that a Twisted Oak Turned Knob walking cane will be somewhat handy in a situation where other aggresive animals
(plenty of four legged and two legged ones in the East Bay of San Francisco area) may become a threat to me or my dogs.
Am I in the right track with this purchase?
Now I need to learn how to properly use it as a defense tool. Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated.
I also bought an 18" hickory wood "tire knocker" to keep around the house. I understand that this item is consiered a weapon if kept in the cabin compartment of a vehicle.

jrldev,
Welcome to the forum. I too am new to it. I've just bought and modified an Nasco stock cane(cost $18.53 shipped). As a martial artist I was taught in stick, bo staff, and sword fighting. Using the cane as a bayoneted rifle will work, figure eight strokes, two handed as in batter up. All depends on the situation, and how you physically can use the cane. Practicing with the cane like in a type of kata/form will give you necessary excercise, plus familiarize you with the capabilities of yourself and cane. Google defensive cane arts, stick fighting, boon sang do, hwa rang do, and Mike Echanis and see what comes up.
