Choosing only one: Glock 19 or FN BHP

The G19 is a darn good gun. The BHP is an extrordinary gun. While the standard mags hold 13 round, there are aftermarket mags that hold as many as 17 rounds. If you find the BHP easier to carry concealed AND more accurate, stick with the BHP.

The reason I am considering to have 2 G19s is that one will be for carry and the other will be left at home for use by my family when I am not around. I don't think they can handle my Saiga 12K yet so I need to leave a pistol for them.

I already have a G26 which I have already decided to sell when I got my G19. Size wise there is not much difference in height since I use a +2 floor plate on the 10-round mag of the G26. The only real difference is in the length of the slide and barrel. I have shot both and find the G19 faster to keep on target than the G26 and a bit more accurate.

One thing I like about the FN BHP is the safety that allows me to leave it in Condition 1 and my wife can manipulate the safety when drawing or setting the pistol aside. With the G19 you have to be careful not to have anything in the trigger guard that would cause an accidental discharge. Of course a good holster like a Fobus would take care of that problem with the G19.

Glocks here are quite expensive also. Altho now they are discounted because of a gun show discount, BHP are only slightly more expensive.

One other point is my BHP is the ones still Made and assembled in Belguim. I noticed the newer ones are now assebled in Portugal. I have nothing against those made in Portugal just that all-Belgian made Hi-Powers seems more original. Btw I heard Glocks will also soon be produced in the USA.

There is no difference. The Portugal assembled guns have the same quality. From what I know, FN now manufactures them totally in Belgium now anyway. However, do not let the "assembled in Portugal" disuade you.

In terms of durability which would last longer and would need more maintenance. My experience with my cousins 45s is that they have to serviced every so often by his gunsmith but it was a carry comp model.

Is the flat black finish on the BHP as durable as that on the G19?

At what round count would either gun need some attention like slide to frame fitting, replacement of some parts, etc.

I would go with the HP...but I think you should go with the G19 and sell me the HP at a great price:)

It seems the general consensus is that both are good pistols and that I should just keep both.

My preference was just to concentrate on one type because the manual of arms for the BHP and the G19 are entirely different.

One factor I believe I should also consider is the serviceability of the pistol. I noticed with the BHP I have to have special punches and pins to be able to disassemble it in detail, whereas in the G19 a simple Glock tool is the only thing required to strip it down. Actually I was able to strip down the entire slide assembly already. Have not yet tried the frame components because they can be easily cleaned anyway without having to resort to a disassembly.

There's nothin' special about 'em. On the older HPs (without the ambi safety), the parts turn into the tools required to disassemble the gun. On the newer ones (WITH the ambi), all that is required is a small pin punch for the safety, and the rest you can make do with just about anything. I use a toothpick. ;)

You do need a punch for some of the parts in the slide, but it is VERY rare to "need" to take the slide apart completely... I do it from time to time, but it's not out of need.

You own them both, so go spend some quality time with both of them and let your hand make the decision for you. (Just as my opinion, I wouldn't get rid of either. ;) )

I was beginning to consider just leaving the BHP at home for my Family's HD use while I use the G19 for CCW.

One advantage of the newer G19s is the rail where a Glock light can be attached and can prove useful at a night time scenario.

With the BHP I tried to remove the trigger assembly to try and reduce the power of the magazine safety to smoothen the trigger pull. But I realized that punch would have been required to remove the trigger pin and the magazine safety pin.

Actually, both of my BHPs have become safe queens to be honest. My CCW and HD gun is the Glock 19, except for when I load up one of the 1911s for HD.
