Thnkas for posting all that. A couple things...

One, ad hype oft inflates velocities to what's just wishful thinking. And sometimes the maker slants the chrono tests to favor the product. Using 28" barrels will help, so does mounting the screens closer.

Two, the very next Mossie 590 with 20" barrel off the assembly line after yours could shoot ammo from the same lot and get differing numbers.

Three, I wouldn't obsess over it. All that stuff should perform adequately if properly directed. That's OUR job...

I have a Mossberg 500A for HD against two-legged and black bear break-ins. The bears here can go 300 to 350. I have on hand slugs, #4 Buck Low Recoil 2 3/4 and 00 Buck 3 inch.

I did have the #4 Low-Recoil loaded, but changed to the 3-inch 00 Buck a few weeks ago after a strange car drove by, apparently scoping out the few houses up here, and a very large, tattooed man in the back seat ducked his head down so that I and my neighbor could not see his face. The car sped off when this happened.

I have heard that the velocity of the 3-inch shells is lower, but there are more pellets. Are the 3-inch 00-Buck my best choice or should I go with other options? I am not real recoil sensitive by the way.

I have had a number of attempted break-ins and each time they came after similar incidents to what you described.

Your neighbor saw two people in the car so prepare yourself for two or more intruders. What has become common in Kansas City are home invasions involving generally two to three armed intruders.

Warn your family not to answer the door and realize that these bastards will often have a young female go up and ring your doorbell as a way to ambush you.

The problem with 3-inch shells for defense is that the recoil slows down your ability to get off your next shot. I am using regular non-magnum 2 3/4" buckshot. I consider No 1 16 pellet and single ought 12 pellet to be the best however they are hard to find. If I were you I would go right down to the store and pick up some Double Ought 9 pellet right away. I would also re-familiarize myself with the Mossberg.

If I were limited to the loads you currently have on hand I would use the 3" double ought. I suspect that the low recoil #4 buck will lack penetration.

I would take action right away to secure your home. You need to set your home up so that you can be alerted to any break in attempt.
