How do you guys mount your chronographs?(tripod, base, table or?) If you have pictures that would be great. Thanks

I use a camera tripod I got at wally world for about $29, it came with the correct threaded screw to attach my chrony 1/4x20 threads per inch. it will adjust to just about any height with the shortening the leg height and it has a crank up riser to raise it higher if you need it. I bought it for a spotting scope but I now use it just for the chrony.

This set up is user friendly, though more suitable for a permanent bench. But it is adaptable with a little thought.

The door hinge allows for removal of the support board. The support board is 10 feet long. The mounting bolts for the chrony stay in the board. The PVC pipe slips over the rigid pipe mounted to the board. Repeatable placement; the door hinge has just enough slop to allow slight adjustment left or right.

i know it's not exactly the question you asked, but i'd strongly advise avoiding the issue by switching to a magnetospeed chrony. it mounts to your barrel, so you
don't have to carry a tripod and all that junk
don't have to go downrange on a square range
can shoot multiple targets without moving your tripod around between each
never shoot the chrono

i've been using one since summer and it's literally never missed a shot. no more "ERR" readings. it also doesn't take readings based on shadows so it doesn't care about the light conditions. you can use it in the dark or indoors

The Magnetospeed is a great chronograph for rifles and I would not want to be without mine. But, it has some limitations. It will not work with semi-auto handguns for obvious reasons.

I just use a tripod for my conventional chronograph. Try to find one with a hook on the bottom of the center mount. Then you can hang something heavy on it to stabilize the tripod. I hang the battery that powers the infrared lights in my CED M2 on the hook on my tripod.

FYI, 1/4-20 threads is the standard camera tripod mount thread. Has been for decades. It would be tough to find a consumer camera product that does not mount via a 1/4-20 thread.

The instructions for the optical style chronos recommend enough distance that you avoid any muzzle smoke passing over the pickups. The recommendation is to be about 5 to 7 yards downrange. So a tripod is the obvious choice it would seem.

I'm wondering if the pickup was attached to a fixed point on a handgun rest so that the bullets passed by in close proximity similar to how it does on the rifle. It would require a front rest that the frame's forward nose rests on as well as a rest point under the magazine's heel but it should be possible to adjust such things to get the bullet passing close and fairly evenly over the sensors without plowing a furrow into the pickup.... :D

I would guess it would be possible but I doubt it is practical. When mounted on a rifle, the bullet path is only about 1/4" above the sensors. The chronograph includes a square rod to use as a measure to make sure the sensors are distanced correctly.

Not much room for error.

Single shot handguns and longer barrel revolvers can use the Magnetospeed chronograph but I do not know the minimum barrel lengths off hand.

I do more chronographing of rifle ammunition so the Magnetospeed works well for my purposes. Also, I still have an optical chronograph that I use for handgun.

If you have a heavy enough tripod or other mount you can also mount them sideways to get low. I figured this out when our main range with a slightly elevated firing line was occupied and I had to shoot prone at our short range.
