My old Pact Chronograph has given me 20 years of service, but sadly I think that it's about to give up the ghost. So I'm looking to get a new one.

I would imagine that the technology has changed a bit in 20 years, so I am asking for advice on what's good on the market today.

I won't say that price is no object, but I am more interested in quality rather than the cheapest bargain out there. My price/performance point leans more to the performance end. :)

I have had several Chrony's, two of the three expired from lead poisoning but they worked. Required a little futzing on occaisions to get the sensors to see the bullet.

I currently have a CDE M2 with the infrared lights. Works fine and I like being able to down load to the computer for print outs.

I just took delivery on a Magnetospeed chronograph. Cool concept. First two strings worked great ( 300 BLK with 125 grain bullets at 2100 fps). The third string, 300 BLK with 155 graing bullets at about 175 fps, gave me pick up problems and it only registered 2 out of about 10 shots. Unfortunately, I got rained out before I could sort out the problems.

The Magnetospeed is neat because it does not use optical sensors and attaches to the barrel. Not really good for handgun though.

The Magnetospeed chronograph saves data as a .CSV file that import directly into a spread sheet program. Save data to a Micro SD card.

More work is needed with the Magnetospeed unit. It shows promise.

Thanks for the input.
I had an early Chrony, but I was always concerned that a stray bullet would take the unit out completely.

From my reading, I am leaning toward the CED M2. The Oehler looks fantastic, but $600 is a little steep.

I have the plain chrony without the printer. I think it's the f1. Used it multiple times without issue over the last 5 years.

I'd be very scared shooting a bullet over a $600 chronograph! Maybe it's bullet proof or something.

I shot two $80 Shooting Chronys.
Then I shot a $100 Pro Chrono.

Then on my 4th chrono, another $100 Pro Chrono I stopped shooting handguns over them.

It has lived for years on a steady diet of rifles.

If I accidentally shot my $100 Pro Chrono, I would buy another one the same day.

The $100 Pro Chrono triggers more reliably than the $80 Shooting Chronys.

Used an Oehler 33 for some years, then the batteries leaked over a winter. Sent it to Oehler and they returned a brand new one.

I vote for the Magnetospeed. Very easy setup and you don't have to worry about shooting it. It will throw off your point of impact, but I think that its a small price to pay.

The control unit is separate from the photosensors. So if a flier strikes anything, the main brain is not down the drain.
