My church just started a shooter's club called BLAST. It's open to the public and you are invited to come out and join us and have a blast! The church is Lakeview Christian Center and is located in Indianapolis. www.lakeviewcenter.org
Just curious... how many other churches out there offer something like this?

Shucks, when I lived in North Carolina, there was a Turkey Shoot at damn near EVERY church on the weekends. Lots of them even had beer stands!

Not so much a church, as a matter of fact, really far from a church, but my high school has a rifle team, which I am a member of. For anybody in the area, it's Robinson Secondary in Fairfax County, Virginia. In other words, D**N close to Warshington.

The looks we get at the athletic awards ceremonies are priceless.

I've been thinking of starting a christian shooting club in my area.Alot of the guys I shoot with are from my church or other churches around me.I'm trying to talk a Pastor friend of mine to start it.

I joked about starting a firearms ministry at church. Most of the people I bring to the range are members of my bible study.

PTA&PTL!!!

The only problem with getting a Pastor or Staff Member to start it, is that they're already busy. You need to be the Coordinator. After all, it was your idea. Then get a small list of people who might be interested. Then the Staff will approve it and announce it through the bulletin, newsletter or whatever.

I can already see the pictures on the power point announcements at our church. Guys with guns blazing and brass flying. It would either have the highest enrollment of any group or get ousted by the "blue hairs".

Your focus doesn't have to be Bible study or prayer meeting when ya'll meet either. This is a chance to get together outside of church and get to know one another. Sharing of burdens, encouragement, etc. will come as the relationships grow. Also a great way to get friends and other gun enthusiasts comfortable around church goers.

I have thought about starting a group at my church too. What am I waiting for???

P.S. Slow you guys sure do have a lot of pastors.

*sniff*

genie's so jealous. i keep inviting people, but it's been slow going at my church. of course i do live in in the suburbs of central maryland... but at least i've changed the perception of some people at my church that gun owners are responsible people...

I am the pastor of a very pro-gun Presbyterian congregation in Pittsburgh. Many of the guys in the church often go shooting and hunting together as a group. Most have CCW permits, including me, and needless to say, I feel very safe in our church. I would say at least 20 of the men carry a handgun. I have thought about bringing some organization to our hunting and shooting activities, and perhaps I will in the very near future.

It's nice to see there are so many other Christians who enjoy the shooting sports.

An aquaintance of mine started a gun club out of their fellowship ministry.

They named it the Ministry of Defense:cool:

It would be nice if I could find a church that was pro gun enough for something like that. The one I grew up in had some sportsmen in it and hunting would occasionally be mentioned but it was rare.

However, I mentioned when I was near to high school graduation that I was thinking about the police academy. Man the reactions I got. According to some of the folks that job would be contrary to the church's beliefs. I couldn't possibly shoot it out with a suspect based on their interpretation of "Thou shalt not kill". They made no distinction between murder and self defense. It was all the same. In fact, one of the preferred outcomes was to "turn the other cheek" ( let the BG kill me). :(

Seeker two said it first. Praise the Lord and pass the Ammunition.

Is this one of those churches that only reads PART of the bible?

Not to start a religious debate here but Luke 22:35-36 says:
35 And He (Jesus) said to them, "When I sent you out without money belt and bag and sandals, you did not lack anything, did you?" They said, "No, nothing." 36 And He said to them, "But now, whoever has a money belt is to take it along, likewise also a bag, and whoever has no sword is to sell his coat and buy one.

And here's some theological commentarty on it:
Buy a sword (agorasatw macairan). This is for defence clearly. The reference is to the special mission in Galilee (Luke 9:1-6; Mark 6:6-13; Matthew 9:35-11:1). They are to expect persecution and bitter hostility (John 15:18-21). Jesus does not mean that his disciples are to repel force by force, but that they are to be ready to defend his cause against attack. Changed conditions bring changed needs.

We have lots of gun ownership, shooters, CCW holders and hunters at our church. Every week there is at least some shooting event. We just got CCW passed in MN and some churches are suing to stop it. Our pastor said if our General Conference joins the lawsuit, out church will withdraw and become totally independent.

Not really. There were some pretty good people in the church. But there were many more like the ones I mentioned. Very liberal, very I know what's best for you. And they seemed to be in the leadership roles.

To give you a point of reference, this church was part of the larger national body that brought you Jim and Tammy Baker among others.

So how does one go about finding out whether a church's national conference is pro gun. Or finding a pro gun/self defense local church?

I'd check out the conferences websites. I checked ours and it only talks biblically, not politically, so thats good. The conference may not specifically take a stand one way or the other, which I think is the right thing to do. When we were shopping for churches we were going to a ELCA Lutheran church. My dad grew up in a Missouri Synod (very conservative) Lutheran church and not knowing much about the ELCA version I checked out
http://elca.org/

Oh man, talk about liberal. They are more of a political organization than church. Check out their position on gun control:
http://www.elca.org/dcs/elca_actions/ca93_6_10.html

Here's the quote:
"To communicate to Congress and the President of the United States the urgent concern of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America regarding the violence associated with the widespread availability of handguns and military assault weapons and [regarding] our support for the Brady Bill and other controls over the manufacture, sale, and private ownership of handguns and military assault weapons;"

Yup, they support the Brady Bill.

Honestly I didn't know about our pro-gun pastor at first, but listening to his sermons, he mentioned hunting a lot. Then I talked with him a bit about guns and he was really into it. He also said in a sermon something like "Banning guns is about the most stupid thing I can imagine. You can use your hand to pick up a gun and shoot someone, or you can use your had to pick up food to feed someone. Either way, it's your choice, not the guns."

I don't ask people directly if their pro-gun. Some hunters wouldn't even consider themselves pro-gun. But I mention hunting, see the reaction and take it from there. Also, I bet if they have a "No guns" sign on the fron of the church, that'd be a tip off too!
