I picked up a used Ciener .22lr conversion kit for my 1911s.

Shoots mostly okay, except now and then it won't go fully into battery.... just a half millimeter off, but enough to keep it from firing.

Looks to me like the cutout on the barrel that the extractor slots into might not be right, and when you push it into battery, the extractor gets moved out of the way just a hair. (toward the outside of the slide).

Question is........

do I take the risk of messing with the extractor, thus probably leading to untold woes, or

install a stronger return spring so that it provides enough force to close it properly, or

take it to a qualified local gunsmith?

I would be more inclined to clean the cutout on the barrel out first just to see if there is years of crud holding things up. Then I'd check to see if the extractor was centered (vertically) within the cutout and that there were no burrs on either part. Then I would lightly open up the cutout with a jeweler's file and leave the extractor alone if at all possible.

Also look at the rest of the breechface to ensure no burrs or age old crud is holding the works up. Additionally, no one ever said dang, these springs in my gun are too new.

I can see the cutout, no crud at all, but there is starting to be some pretty good wear on the inside of the cutout closest to the chamber.... Where the extractor is hitting it.

I'm seeing some aluminum shards here and there also. Wondering if this thing just needs to be shot a few hundred times and that this is a kind of break-in deal?

That doesn't sound right. My Ciener unit didn't have any internal wear patterns.

Is your extractor square and in line with the barrel? Sounds like it may have been knocked a little out of alignment.
