Has anyone had any experence with the Ciener conversion kit for the 1911? What are the PROs and CONs? Do they fuction good or are they dogs? I'm looking to buy and they seem to be the least $$$. Thanks.

Pretty much hit or miss as far as will it drop right on and function. If your gun has a heavier or lighter mainspring it will either short cycle or not hit the primed rim hard enough to fire. I had to play with mine to get the correct balance between full slide travel and going bang every time. Rimfire ammo requires a healthy strike to fire. Also over time the aluminum slide will develop considerable play on the muzzle bore resulting in loss of accuracy.Mine has become sloppy loose to the point where I am contemplating installing two plunger set screws into the slide under the barrel's muzzle to snug it back up. The magazines are expensive and beautifully machined. I have heard countless stories of people contacting the manufacturer for help with problems and being hung up on. Overall it is a lot of cheap fun if you get one that works with your gun but is one of those things where you pays your money and takes your chances.

Got one and it's been 100% in two Bushmasters and a DPMS. 100% as long as I stay away from Remington 22's that is, and get some aftermarket mags with it (Blackdog) the the supplied mag is crap.

edit - oops... never mind, thought I was in the Rifle section and I was thinking AR kits, now where's my coffee?

Yeah, you will find out real quick what brands of ammo it will fire reliably or not. It can be kinda picky.

I bought one through Brownells for a Commander. First time out the extractor broke. I tried to get a new extractor from Ciener but he insisted I sent the conversion in. After a long wait it came back with postage due. I refused it and it went back. I wrote a letter asking what the deal was and got a really nasty letter in return. He accused me of deliberately breaking the extractor and being an idiot who didn't now what I was doing. I responded in kind.

After I calmed down a bit I called Brownells, just to let them know what kind of stuff they were selling. They said it wasn't the first time they had had such a call and offered to replace the conversion kit...free of charge.

Ciener = ZERO!

Brownells = +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++!

The second one Brownells sent me works fine on my Commander frame, but I'll never buy another Ciener product. Got an Advantage Arms conversion kit for my G20s & G21s.

100% RIGHT --- He is a JERK to deal with and ALWAYS states "It's YOUR FAULT " and "Quit Bothering ME with YOUR PROBLEMS " !!!!!!

Go with the Kimber or spend a few more dollars and get the Kart or Day unit. ALso , I had THREE org. Colt Conversions and they ALL developed problems with misfires.

the advantage of buying from Brownells is you DON'T have to call ceiner, just brownells

I got the "Kimber" version a couple years ago from Midway USA and it has been solid so far.

I can believe these stories about Ciener's Customer service. I used to live by their production facility - I couldn't even get anybody's attention while I was standing right there in front of them. :mad:

I got one of the first Cieners produced for my Fed Ord "make it from a kit" gun. It has always functioned satisfactorily, but accuracy is nothing to write home about. I also have a Colt Service Model Ace conversion kit that is much more accurate.

Would you believe this: I called them to ask about availability on a certain model--I had one and wanted another one to go with it. I got a recording saying "If your question is not answered on our FAQ page at our website, send a check or money order for $5 and we will contact you to schedule an appointment to answer your question"

No joke--Ciener's customer service is like something out of the old Soviet Union. They just don't 'get it'. I swore they'd never see another red cent from me and everyone I knew would hear about their answering machine.

Frankly, if the internet had been accessable when I bought my Ciener conversion kit so I could hear other people's experiences with Ciener, I would never have bought it. As it is, I won't buy another Ciener product.

absolutely the worst people I have ever done business with, They would not answer emails. phone calls. took exactly 6 months to get my kit, Had to get a lawyer to send them a letter even to finally get any response from them and that was them sending the kit, after 6 months. kit works fair, I would not brag on it. I should have bought the advantage brand.

oh well live and learn

a friend of mine bought a Para Ordnance and was upset when he found out that the Ciener kit won't work because it has a ramped barrel. I told him the good news is, Ciener makes one for the Para. The bad news is, you have to order it from Ciener directly. Oh well. Forget it and buy a Ruger 45/22.

I have a ciener and three 15 rd mags I bought from Midway, and I have found that all conversion kits need some break in. For a long time, I could only run Stingers or Velocitors through it, now it has loosened up a little and works just fine with Mini-mags. I am considering getting a dedicated frame with a lighter mainspring to see if it will cycle regular ammo more easily.

My friend had one of their conversions and needed service. Long Story Short....said he would like to put his foot up the owners rear end.

I have constantly heard that Ceiner is the last person on the planet you should deal with. Get a Kimber conversion unit; mine's been pretty solid, but it can be picky about ammo (feed it HV stuff). Plenty accurate, and a nice way to practice one's draw/safety/shoot for cheap. Its easily paid for itself.

Thanks for the input. I try not to do buiness with companies with poor customer service. Sounds like this guy is a real winner. I have a kimber so I my stick with the guys from Yonkers. Thanks for the heads up.

No joke about Ciener!!!!!!!! I met the guy once and it was like trying to have a conversation with a cottonmouth...................unbelievable..........hell, the POPE'd kick him out!
