Hello All,

I've got a Cimarron 1878 Coach Gun on the way and want to give it a thorough cleaning/degreasing when it arrives. I've searched but can't find any tips or tricks on stock removal.

Can anyone please help?

Thank you,

Eric

I assume, and you know what everyone says about assumptions, that you remove the buttplate which should expose a longitudinal hole in the buttstock containing a bolt which secures the stock to the frame/action. Usually the bolt can be removed with a long screwdriver. In attempting to remove stocks for refinishing the wood and/or the action, I've encountered a few firearms where I was unable to get the screw out. One was an older Remington pump .22 that had spent some of its lifetime under the seat of a pickup truck and probably had acquired some corrosion in the screw/frame interface.

However, I see no reason to remove the stock on a new firearm. There is nothing there that requires degreasing/cleaning that cannot be accessed from the front. Hose out the action with GunScrubber or brake cleaner, relube, and leave well enough alone.

Nope, no conventional bolt under the buttplate cover. I removed all of the obvious screws but no dice and didn't want to go too far. There's got to be a trick to it. The mechanism is caked with grease, almost like Cosmoline. Yes, I can remove all the grease on the outside that I can see, but it just feels sluggish like it definitely needs a soak to remove all the gunk.

Its a side lock double, so take out the side plates on some you only need to remove the rear most screw. On some there are screws farther forward and the whole side plate needs to come out depending on how it was built (carefull when pulling out so as not to bugger the sear). then the tang screw and on some the screws for the trigger guard also be careful as the wood tends to be thin around the locks
