I have heard some rumors that FN will make a [strike]Overlord approved[/strike] civi version of the SCAR.

Is this true?
If so any clues when it will come out?

Thanks,

That's exactly that, a rumor.:)

FN gave us the PS90 and FS2000. They are not going to give us the SCAR, that's a SOCOM toy.

Actually one of the FN reps on AR15.com stated that they did plan to release a civilian version of the SCAR but that due to the small production numbers, initial testing and contract issues it would be awhile before it happened.

Thanks Mr. Roberts!

all I have to say is wOOt lol time to save more pennies ... and stock up more .308!

I am rather intrigued by either an XCR or SCAR heavy variant. Something that is 7.62 NATO, has wizbang tacticool potential (hey, I have an FAL and a M1A to scratch the 'traditional' itch), and is not an AR-pattern.

What's not to love (besides the price tag)?

What? :scrutiny:

Anyway, I too am hoping for a semiauto SCAR Heavy. While the interchangable barrels might not be especially useful to an individual infantryman (who's not going pack around with an extra barrel in his ruck anyway), it'd be immensely useful for us civilan shooters who want to make the most out of a given rifle platform.

Personally, I'm hoping for a 16-18" mid-weight "standard" barrel, along with maybe a 20-22" heavy barrel. Of course, now that I live in a state where such things can be done, I'd be immensely tempted to put on one of those 12" CQB barrels and pay the SBR tax.

Downside? Well, it won't take the same magazines as my FAL, so I'll have to stock up all over again.

Upsides? The SCAR has a lot going for it. Modular design, long optics rail, other rails without going overboard.

I don't know that I'm thrilled with the stock. I understand the military desire for adjustable LOP stocks, but for my personally, a 13" LOP fixed stock would be just as well.

And for some reason, they insisted on putting a stupid M16A2 grip on their with that annoying little tab thing that goes between your fingers. Easy enough to swap that out, though.

Normally, I don't prefer rifles with the sight line so far above the receiver, but...it's a necessity these days. If you don't do that, but then flat-top it for mounting optics, your stock comb is then too low for cheek weld.

At any rate, I'd put an Aimpoint or something on there and the iron sights would be only as backup.

And I really really hope they make it in some other color than baby poop.

The BIG downside to waiting for a SCAR is that the military is interested. A SOCOM order won't entail hundreds of thousands of units, but I've heard that the USMC is interested in the design, too. If FN gets a major military contract for some variant of the SCAR, then the civvie version will likely go on the back burner. FN is really interested in the civilian market, unlike, say, HK, but big DOD contracts are the cash cow.

I remember a post on ar15.com with emails from a rep at FN stating that there would be a civilian SCAR light and heavy but they would not have the interchangable barrels. I'll try to find it but it's been a while and might be buried in the archive.

Excellent chance I am in for both a SCAR Light and Heavy the second they are available. Assuming they have the quick-change barrel feature intact. Otherwise, well, still a very good chance I am in for one of each. :D

When I was at the Shot Show this year fondling and drooling on the SCAR-L and SCAR-H the FN rep told me they were definitely going to build a civilian version.

I have to call FNH at leat once a month for work and can say it is not a rumor; official word from FN is that there will be a semi-auto SCAR. However it did not sound like they were going to be started on it until after 2007.

So start saving now as I'm sure it won't be cheap.

Flat Dark Earth, AKA baby poop, is the new U.S. Military firearm color...and they have decreed they will not be using all black guns in the future. They want the carbines to blend in better with the surroundings....thats also why all those .45acp SOCOM pistol contract candidates were also "baby poop" color.

I understand that. I don't really want it in black, either. But for the price FN will likely ask for the rifle, I should be able to get my choice in color. I like green. The military can have "flat dark earth" if they want. It looks too yellow for my taste.

I expect the civvie version will be available in different colors if it does well. Plastic is plastic; one color costs as much to make as another.

Worse comes to worse, I'd have it refinished.

From what I understand, when using night vision black stands out quite a lot, thereby giving the Army an impetus to move away from black weapons.

I'm really starting to like/respect FN for selling civy versions of what they make.

Unlike many other makers they treat us like adults.

I really like that PS90!

Looking forward to the SCAR. However, afraid the price might scare me away.

Nightcrawler, I was es'playnin where baby poop came from, to that other guy
(not FN's idea, but the end customer's idea):)
Being that there has never been a civy scar prototyped up yet, no color is set in stone for us...if it follows the other recently released civy guns, it will be green and black, and or all black either factory, or the ever popular dye job.
Whats not covered by that can be duracoated. nobody is stuck with a color they dont like, as they are ours to do with as we please (even Neon Lime green Duracoat with tiddy pink tiger stripes if one has the money)
