My 12 year old son and I went to Fort Meade yesterday to a Civil War re-enactment of the Bowlegs creek battle. They had period correct vendors there with some pretty cool hand made items. The weather was fantastic and overall it was a great day. Here are a few shots of the smoke and action:D

These next 2 are of the cannon blasts...

There ain't nothing like seeing a 12# gun go off, or should I say feeling a 12# gun go off. Even if they didn't have any twelve pounders I'd still make do with the little six pounders. Although as somebody who thinks Walkers eat too much, I doubt I'll ever really get a cannon.

Yes sir, the cannons shook the earth!! That was the best part. The Remmy's were being fired with what appeared to be just the caps. No smoke at all.

Isn't that how Remmies always fire?:neener:

Sorry, I just couldn't resist after all the Colt bashing that's been going on in other threads.;)

Phantom Captain: Get : out of here ya D@#% yankee! This is a trooper from the 9th VA. CAV. talkin.:D

SO there I was in the O-club at Ft Silll,OK staring at myself in my dress blues in the big mirror by the door (got to check yourself out before letting the enlisted folks see ya) When a General Officer walked up behind me and asked if I was just admiring my new butter bars.

I told him I was just wondering how my great great grandpas under their CSA marked stones would feel seeing me standing there dressed as a Yankee Cannon Cocker.....his response was "Yeah, son, mine probably worry over that , too."

and despite being around a lot of 105s, 155s and 8 inchers firing...yeah a 12 pounder with BP is still a rush

Also those within driving distance of Lake City Florida ...Olusttee re enactment is 17-19 Feb, with night cannon firing currently scheduled for 8PM Friday.

and you yankees can see plenty of your boys there...loosing.

I don't think you could buy a cow for $650 (Bovine)

But I do actually have a tanned Buffalo/Bison hide that if I recall correctly is about 8ft across that I've been thinking about selling. If anyone thinks it's worth $650 it sounds pretty good to me. Free shipping and I'll send it with a $100 bill enclosed.

Malachi, almost tempting... :)
There's a story behind that 105mm, Vietnam fire base?
I'd love to go to a re-enactment, but Arizona is kinda sparse on Civil War history.

On a whim, my wife and I took the kids to a "living history" weekend a few years ago that happens annually remarkably close by at a several-hundred acre family homeplace. They have American Revolution through Vietnam encampments set-up by people that are really into the history and the gear, and boy do they bring the gear, all their personally-owned stuff. Some reproductions, but lots of real original uniforms, camp-gear, and weapons from small arms to cannon. Last year my 14 year old son got to shoot a number of original full-auto WWII arms, both German and US issue, including a 50 cal mounted atop a running halftrack (all blanks of course).

The reinactments include Civil War, Vietnam, and WWII skirmishes with all the iron rumbling. Learning from knowledgeable enthusiasts who love to share their passion with anyone who cares to ask is a great way to absorb some fascinating history. The kids love it and we go back every year now.
