Compiling facts and figures is an attempt to put rationality into the gun debate.

In the United states, at least, ultimately this is futile. The gun debate here revolves around emotional feelings, not around facts. People's attitudes are already ossified, pro or con. Facts are not going to change anyone's mind.

What it boils down to, on both sides, is raw political power. So far the pro-gun side has been winning, but maybe not for much longer.

It seems unlikely that 5/6 of all firearms were made or imported in the last 17 years.
