Hey guys, I got 2 ruger old army's but I think I will get an 1858 remington- almost a must have for all bp enthusiasts, I'm sure. What other models should most or every bp shooters get, if they can afford it? I want to have a couple of models, just to have/collect/shoot with, and I would like to know which 6 guns you would own BP wise, if money was not an issue? This is for general shooting/hunting/fun- What would you get? I would get:

1. Ruger Old Army - I have 2 of these.
2. Remington 1858 Army
3. Starr double action bp revolver - I have 1 of these
4. Uberti "Cattleman" - I have 1 of these
5. .31 Pocket pistol
6. Naa mini .22 magnum bp revolver - I have this one.

Thanks guys!:)

Rogers and Spencer.

Most features of the Ruger, in a beefy traditional package. Target versions available, too, with different rifling and modern adjustable sights.

What I want most

My favorites list starts with two I don't yet have, naturally. It might change once I have them, however at this point I can think of no reason why that would be. Thus:

1. Ruger Old Army
2. Colt Walker

and these are the ones I have:

3. Colt Dragoon (1 2nd and 1 3rd)
4. Rogers & Spencer (2)
5. Colt 1873 SAA
6. Colt 1851 Navy
7. Colt 1860 Army
8. Remington 1858 Navy
9. Colt 1861 Navy
10. Starr SA
11. Colt 1862 Pocket Police

After number 3 the order changes every time I think about it, or after each trip to the range.

Starr Double Action-

Yes, Mec- It does work. But I find that it is kind of hard to be accurate when firing as double action, by the time I pull the trigger hard/long enough to fire it, I'm off center. It does shoot well, though. Back in the past, if I had one of those, I would have felt better in a defensive situation to pull off quick, multiple shots. But I also find that I have to clean it more than a single action, because there are more moving parts, of course. Other than that, really cool gun. The only double action BP revolver I have seen so far. I think it was a police gun, thats what it looks like to me.

they were made in New Orleans, ( I seem to remember) as a double acton 36 before the Union army got interested and asked for it in .44. there were problems with delivery so, the majority of those that were purchased for military use were a modified single action design. About 22,000 units were eventually produced and it died out after the war. One army officer said that whoever had foisted it upon a nation at war should be strung up as a traitor.

the outside fit and finish of those I've seen has been really good. Looks like an original exceptfor the pietta markings and proof marks. These started comeing into the country about 1989 and there were many mechanical problems. Since you have one that works, you are in the lucky minority. some shooters say their guns ( the ones that work) are pretty accurate when you use the hair trigger. It would be hard to get much accuracy with the hammer notch rear sight under constant motion.

OK

My pics for must haves if you're wanting to build a collection: (in order of recommended purchase :) )

1851 Colt .36
1860 Colt .44
1858 Remington .44 These three alone would make a great collection
1849 Dragoon .44
1847 Walker .44
1849 Colt Pocket .31
1862 Colt Police .36
1861 Colt Navy .36
1861 Colt Pocket .36

After the 1858 I really don't have much of an order recommendation and really the top three could be purchased in any order - just a preference.

The order that I purchased and what I've got so far:

Pietta 1860 Colt .44
Pietta 1860 Colt .44 snub nose
Uberti 1849 Colt Dragoon 3rd model military .44
Pietta 1858 Remington .44 target model
Uberti 1847 Colt Walker .44
Uberti 1851 Colt .36 (just got this today!)

I was all .44 until today. The little .375" balls seem so small compared to the others :D

If your .375balls are hornady, some of them may just drop into the chamber and come back out stuck to the loading ram. Speer 375s are actually round and work well in my ubertis.

Yeah, thanks guys. I am so happy with my rugers, I think I will get all finishes, all lengths in those first, and just get the 1858 remmie. That would be it for me.

I don't currently have any open tops, lever or cartridge.

I'd like to get one or two. Those old Colts can balance really nicely.

I like these

clockwise from 12 o'clock: 1861 Navy (w. stock attached), 1851 Navy, 1860 Army, 1863 Starr SA, Ruger OA, 1860 Army (duplicate, just to show off stock), 1849 Pocket, Whitney .36, 1849 Baby Dragoon, 2nd Model Dragoon, Walker

I know I should add a .44 Remmie to the mix, but for some reason, I've never been smitten by them, even though the ROA and the Whitney are of the same general appearance.
