Classic heirloom hunting rifle - $1000 budget

Unfortunately I can't remember the last time I was in a Walmart that sold guns

If you want a true classic heirloom rifle go to some gun shows or do some looking on gunbroker and get a sporterized mauser or other classic custom rifle. $1000 for a new gun cannot buy the beautiful old world craftsmanship that people used to put into hunting rifles. For $1000 though you can get some really stunning old custom rifles.

Right on.

The wood on new rifles is awful. I think if you want a classic you have to spend some time looking at older rifles. The classic bolt gun is a Mauser or similar action like a M70. Although the newer rifles are better regulated they just leave me cold.

I've seen some pretty nice old rifles at the LGS in your price range. Many of them custom builds with Mauser actions.

The Vanguard Deluxe is a nice rifle. At $498.00 it’s an outstanding rifle and with the OP’s budget he could get two, sell one and buy a nice scope.

For some reason Vanguards and Howas aren't big sellers. I picked up a Howa Mini at Cabela's when they closed them out. I can't remember exactly what I paid for it but it was less than $300. 1 MOA for at least 3 rounds.

True, we have four Vanguards in the family though and I really like them. Biggest complaint I hear is about the weight.

Whelp, my buddy gave me the go ahead and I just ordered a NIB Browning BAR Mark II Safari in .30-06 off gunbroker for 950 OTD. Subtract $50 for the current browning rebate and I’m at $900. Hope I dont regret this. The BAR was just too beautiful. Like a siren song it sucked me in lol.

Take care of it, keep it clean, and it will sever you well. I know a few BAR shooters.

Heading up to the FFL this morning to get a jump on the paperwork and have them send their FFL to the seller. Will post pics when I get this thing. Im excited. Didnt even realise they are still “Made” in Belgium albeit “assembled” in Portugal at Browning Viana where new model 70s are born. Everything I've seen come out of those two places seems quality.

Very nice. I’ve always been a sucker for the Browning humpback look.
I think thats what it is... I've always loved the looks of A5s. I have no need for any more shotguns so this satisfies that itch I suppose.

Those CZ rifles are beautiful, and they shoot well. If I wanted a new, wood stocked rifle and my budget was that high? I'd look at CZ and one with that oil finish. CZ USA is pretty receptive to phone calls.

And I do all my hunting with a plastic stocked Savage in stainless I have scratched too many 'nice' wood stocks. On an oil finished stock you just buff it out.

A young friend of mine was given a Browning BAR in .30-06 back in the mid 1980's by his mother for his HS graduation present. He rarely shoots it and it is a pretty thing that prints 1-1/2 groups with boring regularity.

Good choice. Pretty, functional, classic. What more could a fellow want?

Got to shoot it yesterday. What a smooooth shooter. Recoil felt like shooting my 1100 with bird loads. Went and got a throwaway scope to put on there until I can afford a Vortex razor HD LH 1.5-8x or 2-10x.

Put a VX-3i 2.5-8x36 on it. It will serve as well or better than a Razor at less cost and will look much better on the rifle. This isn’t gospel, just my opinion.

The VX-3i series is the other main series I was eyeballing. How might that 2.5x fare for those up close shots? Too much magnification for up close is my main concern with that one. Also, firedot or duplex?

I’ve not had any trouble as close as ten yards with 3x so 2.5 should be better.

Reticle choice is complicated, kind of like dating a German chick. I’m a German #4 fan and would have the Leupold Custom Shop install one. You can’t get a VX-3i 2.5-8x36 with an illuminated reticle.

Unfortunately I know nothing about German women, but that vortex razor HD LH has that German number 4 reticle. Any reason you prefer the Leupy over it? Also, I get the models confused. Was thinking of the VX-R

I haven’t kept up with Vortex scopes because I don’t care for them. I do think the Razor line is good though. I imagine there are some fairly light weight models now but that wasn’t always the case. The Razors I’ve handled were big, bulky and heavy.

If I were a target shooter there is a good chance I’d own a Razor because the repeatability of their turrets is excellent. The Leupold VX line definitely are not for turret twisting but the turrets are easily precise enough to sight a scope in. If you are going to be shooting way out there then a Razor is definitely a good choice.

For the distances I would shoot a BAR in 30-06 the Leupold would be perfect. 8x is plenty for me on deer out to 400 yards.

I have a VX-R 2-7x33 with a Firedot 4 reticle on an AR and wouldn’t hesitate to pair it with a 30-06 BAR.

For years for deer I used a VX-R 4-14x40. Shot deer as close as fifty feet, as far as 300 yards. Never had an issue. The Firedot is really nice for low light and poor weather conditions. If you don’t move the rifle for 5 minutes it automatically shuts off, the turns back on when moved. It is awesome

The glass is exceptionally clear.
