Clay shooting for the young and unsupported

You do not need an over and under, which is good because I don't like them, and can't shoot them. I use a semi auto, and you can get in a good one of those, used, under $500. I always think that is the way to go getting started anyway, and move up when you have become more knowledgeable and developed more personal tastes. If you get a name brand and take decent care of it you shouldn't lose a dime, and you may decide to stay with it in any event.
I started trying to hit clays about 50 years ago. I found the "right" semi auto 47 years ago, started actually hitting them, and still have it, and still shoot it. And there probably haven't been more than 25 other shotguns along the way. Maybe 30. :)

Thanks for your effort!

Atticum,
I was a competitor at the shoot in Nashville this past weekend......first, thank you for your effort to help us have a great shoot!

Second, don't be scared....it is a great sport. As you saw, Sporting Clay shooters are eager to let you try their guns....and you should take advantage of it! You don't have to start with the Gamaliel Cup...there are plenty of smaller shoots and practice days between you and the " big show". Enjoy the journey!

As far as what gun to shoot...don't fret. The fine young man who won the shoot was wielding a relatively stock Beretta 391.

Runner up was shooting a Beretta DT10;)
