I am going to start shooting clays at a local range. Can someone tell me what is a decent shotgun for this not looking to spend a ton of money I was thinking of a Remington Express my local dealer had one but not shure how they are. I will not be using it alot just once in a while mostley shoot handguns but figured would be fun. I am looking to spend no more than 400.00.

Thanks in advance.

For most shotgunning activities, an 870 is not a bad choice. For a new shotgunner, it's often the best choice.

Here's a recipe for becoming a shotgunner.

Buy an 870.

Get the stock fitting you so it shoots where you're looking.

Make sure the trigger is 4 lbs or less. Some still come from the factory like that.

Buy Ammo, Use Up, Repeat.

And then one day soon you know the target is destroyed AS you press the trigger.

Congrats, you're a shotgunner....

Thanks for the reply's. I am going to pick up the 870 express Thanks again. Now to decide wood or black stock oh the decisions...:)

shooter.45,

If for clay games, let's put it this way, you don't see many black plastic stocks at clay games. There are some, but they are in the extreme minority, at least in my area. They are also harder to fit to an individual if you have to cut or pare down some wood also.

I'm a bit prejudiced. I like wood and blue. :scrutiny:

I have been thinking about it since my last post. And you are correct I think wood would look better. I am going to have him order me one on Monday wood 28" barrel. Thanks again

I'd go with an 1100. You don't see many pumps anywhere but the trap field.

Skeet and sporting clays require a quick second shot. It can be done with a pump, but it's just not as easy.

I'd go with Dave's receipe except for:

Buy an 870.

I'd change it to "Buy a shotgun that has the controls you like" it may be an 870 it may not. Pretty much everything else can be changed but whether they put the safety and slide release where you like it is a bit harder to change. At least for me it's annoying when I go for the safety and find the slide release.
