Cleanin' your stones...

I know that most gunsmiths and wannabes like me have a bunch of stones for smoothing out all kinds of ills in metal, from sticky parts to making that trigger break like a glass rod (still haven't mastered that one yet) .

What do you use to clean them with? I use a old can of aerosol Rem Oil. It works like magic as the black crud just rinses right off with the honing oil...

And for you guys/gals with minds in the gutter...

I use the Rem Oil on the natural stones and Simple Green on the ceramics. It's good to have a set of stones

I have found that a light application of ZUD cleanser followed by a good rinsing with water, will remove all of the metal fouling from my natural and my ceramic stones, diamond hones come clean with soapy water or oil.

I just keep the soaking in kerosene is that bad?

I've been using the parts washer that I also use to clean my guns with... keep it full of Ed's Red and hold the stones under the washer flow and see them almost immediately flushing out all the crud... they come out clean as new... but I don't use this for my synthetic stones...

Depending on Norton, Arkansas,Diamond or Ruby--and how fine:

Baking Soda and Ammonia (most often used)
Bon ami (tm)
Simple Green.
Dove or Ivory Dishwashing soap.

I have restored old stones that had a huge amount of oxidized oil (varnish) and metal particles by boiling in trisodium phosphate. I have also used it to clean guns that had the same problem ( make sure there are no aluminum parts)
