Quick question, have any of you had problems with cleaning agents "melting" or "eating" your polymer stocks?

If so, please name the stock material, and the cleaning agent.

Thanks!

Not exactly, but similar/related.The first time I tried out Gunscrubber aerosol, it removed some of the clear clear coat finish from my S&W m637 (and I've heard it would melt polymer guns/grips also).I beleive that Gunscrubber now has a polymer safe formula (also, S&W stopped using that clear coat at some point and went to a different finish on the guns that had it previously)

Thanks, that's fairly interesting to me, as I think of gun cleaning solutions as glorified nail polish remover, which means it should do a number on lacquer and other coatings.

Yep, I melted part of what I think is an ATI brand aftermarket Mosin-Nagant stock.

Gunscrubber bad. It is an effective cleaner, though.

Try brake cleaner, Hoppes spray cleaner, GunScrubber for Synthetics (GunSafe?), etc.

I understand that carb cleaner is bad stuff, I wouldn't want to use it anyway (too much methyl-ethyl-bad-sh*t).

Anyone have any experience using tetrachloroethylene on synthetics? Chlorinated HC are usually bad stuff but it's the solvent in Tetra aerosol products. I've been assuming it's bad stuff for most plastics.

Regardless of what you use, it's a good habit to protect the stocks (even just the way you hold the piece as you clean it, don't let the solvent run all over it) and to wipe it down pretty quickly afterwards.

CZ-75B plastic grips and any spray cleaner. IIRC one drop of Gunscrubber made a gooey mess where it landed. It dissolves the grips on contact.

No problems on a Ruger .22/45 or Rem 1100 black synthetic, although some cleaners will leave a whitish offcolor streak, but a little wipe with an oily rag will fix it. I use synthetic-safe spray cleaner on my camo Win SX-2 and even then try to keep it off the camo.

i always use good ole hoppe's to clean the bore on my guns with a bronze brush... i was wondering about the sythetic stock on the new savage mkII i got last year.. i never thought much about it harming a sythetic stock as much as a laminate or wood stock....

dad got gun scrubber on the stock of my 4/10 gauge and it messed up the finish a little. i love gun scrubber, but i'm always careful not to get it on wood or metel.
my second tip for useing the stuff is go outside to do it so you don't get it on your floor/table/whatever.

M-Pro7 :D That is one of the best cleaners I have used, and is completely safe.

Breakfree PowderBlast did a number on the rubber buttpad on a Rem 700 of mine, It doesn't harm the polymer stock, though. I don't know what the stock is made of, polymers, I guess.

I had some regular GunScrubber melt the plastic floorplate of a Pro-Mag.

I play it safe with all plastic parts and use A - the "synthetic safe" version, and B - don't blast the part directly with the cleaner.
