what is the proper way to clean them and how much lube if any?

Blow them out with compressed air if needed. Unless they get packed with mud, I have never had a need to sit down and clean them. Now, if they do get packed with mud, I strip them down and rinse them with water. I dry them, then add a VERY light layer of oil to the spring. I then wipe the spring with a dry cloth. No need to leave the oil on to attract dirt. Everything else gets air dried.
