Cleaning Black Powder Revolvers in the Dishwasher

The other day I saw someone mention how they cleaned their Stainless Revolver in the dishwasher. Does this work well on polished steel? Does one use normal dishwasher detergent? and what if any effect does this have on "blued Metal" or "case hardened parts?

I'd say this would be ok with something like a stainless ROA, but I'd be very concerned about unknown quality 'stainless' or worse still, blued steel rusting. On occasions I have dishwashed some of our older baking tins etc - and they often come out with red rust spots...

I'd say it's easier and just as effective to clean the traditional way with hot soapy water, followed with boiling water/drying in the sun and WD-40 to displace the last of any moisture. Also avoids un-necessary unpleasantness from SWMBO!

Works fine stainless or blued.

It has cleaned cosmoline for me but my honey won't let me in the kitchen anymore to try cleaning a bp arm.

When the Old Fuff was very much younger, he decided to clean his original 1851 Navy in his Mother's electric dish washer. Seemed like an easy way to get the job done.

He removed the backstrap and stocks, and then pulled off the barrel & cylinder...

So far, so good.

Leaving out the backstrap, stocks and screws, he placed the rest in the tray usually reserved for glasses and small plates...

Some soap, and he was ready to go..,

Well the parts came out very clean, but there was this sort of super bathtub ring...

Then Mother came home.

The Young Fuff is very lucky that he survived to become an Old Fuff. It was the one and only time I ever tried using the dishwasher...

Some trips to the range involve a half dozen revolvers. I well pop the grips and run them through the dishwasher. Blow dry with compressed air, then spray down with Ballistoll, wipe down and good to go. Works with stainless, blue or raw metal.
