Cleaning brass without a tumbler?

Do not attempt to use your dryer as a tumbler, no matter how well you seal your bags.

Don't ask how I know.

The absorbtion of lead is possible with some lead compounds and lead oxides. This is where the problem lies.

With that said I believe the dangers are greatly overblown. However drying in the oven where food is cooked or drying in the clothes dryer is not the smartest thing to do especially if you have youngesters around.

Leave them in the car in the sun while at work, if you still have a job in this economy.

Another vote for the clothes washer, but NOT the dryer.

Before I got a tumbler MANY years ago, I'd put a few hundred cases in a cloth (mineral sample) bag, pour in some powdered detergent, tie it closed, and run the bag(s) through a complete wash cycle. They'd come out with a nice "matte" finish and very clean. Spread 'em on a towel in the bright sun for a few hours, and evenwhere we lived in the far North, they'd be totally dry.

Here in Nevada, now....they get so hot from direct sunlight that I'd have to watch out for burns!

For the outside of the brass... a rag and some polishing or rubbing compound makes for some really shiny brass... if it's live ammo... it also shines the bullet up nicely too...

I use the Lee trimmer shell holder in a cordless drill... dip the rag in the compound, and spin for about 10 secs while slowly dragging it along the shell body...

Cheers

Run them through a carbide sizing die.

I have been reloading since 1976. Never owned a tumbling thing. Don't need one.
If your stuff gets wet or muddy, soap and water.

There for lead will kill you, with some form Of cancer, in the next hunderd years or so, LOL sorry had to.

A buddy gave me 500 loaded rounds of 308. When I opened the box they were tarnished.

I don't want to put them in my rifle but I don't think I should run them through my tumbler either. I'm considering cleaning them one at a time, by hand.

Good quote until the Dr. walkes into your room abd informs you you have cancer, no longer a (lol) situtation. Believe me its a REAL shock and brings right up to full attention. Don't bother asking how I know but believe me I do.
