After reading a few threads on cleaning. I start pulling guns out and taking off the grips and found all kinds of problems. First the Hogue grips are bad for causing rust under the panels on my Sig 226, not that bad and I was able to clean it up pretty good. I found lots of grime and build up on the others and one stripped grip screw (I need one for 1911 Kimber) I always thought I had taken good care of my guns but have not stripped them down or taken them apart to clean all that much. I found that needs to happen more often then I had planned. Its alot of work and be careful of parts falling out or flying out in some cases. After all the stress and cleaning and oiling I went to my last gun. All I had left to do was pull the grips off my XD9 and I was all done. (Done sooner then I thought) !!!!!
Tomorrow I will move on to the long guns.

I normally remove the grips of a gun (especially wood ones) when doing a thorough cleaning. In addition to cleaning under the grip area, this protects the finish of the grips from solvents & sprays. The finish on wooden grips will get stripped and the wood underneath can dry out & become brittle -it'll also make them uglier.

Told my Son about the ordeal and we are going to get some info on break down of some of these pistols. Just so we do not run into any problems.
Good idea to do this every other shoot or so.
