I have a cva optima that's about 13-14yo and last year I used it then let someone else use it so didn't clean it when I gave it to them. well when I got it back I forgot to clean it and its been in the basement since January.

I use hodgdons 777. I know its dirty but im wondering is this barrel now ruined? im playing with the idea of buying a new version of mine but money is tight and part of me says just deal with the things I don't like about mine but if the barrel is shot then I will have to buy the new one Saturday.

I would try removing the breech plug, sticking the muzzle in a 5-gallon bucket of HOT soapy water, and alternate pulling the water up with a copper brush and a mop. I would expect it to come clean within 50 passes of each. Then, if it is pitted, shoot it to remove burrs and smooth the bore.

If it is minor pitting relieved into the barrel steel, it would have very little affect one way or the other, a couple of shots of lead or sabots should smooth everything out.

wont shooting it pitted cause danger issues?

It will reduce accuracy if the bore is badly pitted. There should be no safety issues though. Well, unless it is BADLY pitted. Like I can poke through it with a pen type of pitted.

Clean it as usual then get yourself some JB http://www.brownells.com/gun-cleaning-chemicals/solvents-degreasers/bore-cleaning-paste/j-b-non-embedding-bore-cleaning-compound-prod1160.aspx

After around 50-100 strokes of JB, if you still have pitting I would trash that barrel and get another one. YOUR problem may be your Breech Plug being frozen on. May be time to break out the WD-40 and a good long handled ratchet and probably a vast amount of cursing! That BP is probably corroded on like it's welded. Good luck.

Use some antisieze on the plug. Pump hot soapy water through the bore and if it still shoots you're good to go.
