Hey all,
To make a long story short, I lost a cleaning rag in the barrel of my T/C .54 cal muzzle loader while trying to clean it. I've tried numerous times to hook the rag with a bore brush but theres too much rag and I can't get it out. This is the 1st time this has happened to me.

Does anyone have any tips?
I need to get this rag out!

You will need to make or buy a spiral type hook that is made for this purpose. You can find them on Cabelas or Midway's on line web pages. Also you could make one by using a paper clip or bailing wire wrapped into your cleaning patch loop. Twist tightly with a pliers screw back onto your cleaning rod and spin into the rag until it is snagged. Pull out.

we've all been there. it will come out.

Maybe, cut up a Wire Coat Hanger, and, bend and file a small 'J" on the end? Make it so the edge would not scratch the Bore of course, with some shaping by Filing or Belt Sanding on the 'J' end part.

I'd think that ought to do it..!

That or, undo the Nipple, trickle in a little 3 or 4 F Powder, screw the Nipple back in, put on a Cap, and, let 'er rip! I bet that would be fun to see!

Don't help him guys! Figuring this out on our own is a right of passage in the gun-owning community:neener:

On a serious note (just in case you can't detect the sarcasm) DO NOT try to shoot it out.

Go fishin'. NO, not literally... a small fish hook on a line and a split shot lead to help it drop down low enough... "Fish on !!!" :D

When I couldn't locate my TC patch worm having 2 spiral wire hooks, I used the exact same method recommended by Tuckerp229 and twisted a paper clip around a patch pulling loop. After a few tries it worked! ;)

Did you try pulling the nipple/touch hole and blowing the rag out with compressed air?

heat a small fish hook to remove the temper. use a pliers to bend it sort of straight with the point sticking out fasten the straightened hook to the end of a 1/4 inch or 5/16 dowel, wire etc, stick the point of the fishook into the rag so the barb grabs it and pull.

Or go to your nearest supplier and buy a patch worm.

I have used the exact method prescribed by zimmerstutzen with the fish hook bent straight and attached to a dowel. It worked like a champ, the barb does grab and pulls it out. Invest in the patch worm.

Don't use a CO2 BB pistol and forget there's a BB in it... don't ask how I know... ;)

Get a length of 1/4" brass bar stock long enough to reach the patch. Thread one end, then grind it to a point. Put it down the barrel and thread it into the patch. Pull it out. Kinda like a ball puller.

Thanks everyone, I think I'd rather go with the store-bought tool, before I try and fabricate a tool. Does anyone know what the tool is called? Like someting I could buy at Cabela's.

I've removed lost patches by driving a small nail in the end of a wood dowel, cutting off the head, and bending a small hook on the end.. Give it a twist or three..snags the patch.

I've tried patch worms, but they usually bend and are useless. Try a ball puller.

Yes, I'm serious. I've used a ball puller on patches for years, and found it quite satisfactory.

This thread reminds me of the time I had an impossibly wedged dry ball in the bore. No tool could grab it. They just made it wedge harder. In the end I had an insight while using my inertial bullet puller on some old cartridge ammo. Using simple inertia, I banged the barrel crown on a carpeted hard surface, with it and my arm forming the "L" shape. I and the barrel became the bullet puller. Bullet came right out.

That's ingenious, but it doesn't help much at getting the OP's stuck rag out of his bore, now does it? :banghead:

Take out the nipple, pour in a little powder, it dont take much. Use your ramrod to seat the rag againdt the powder. Put the nipple back in, cap it and blow the rag out. Only takes a few minutes but be sure to seat the rag against the powder. That way it wont act as a bore obstruction

Hi Snaggletooth,

Yuppers...that's what I'd do if it were me..!

Sounds fun, too...

iVE DONE IT. Hat one that had oil on it. I popped it out with a couple of caps. I popped a cap. stuck my ramrod down to see if it moved and it had. I kept it up till it popped the rag.

Alright guys!
Finally, after hours of messing around with bore brushes, firing caps, grinding a threaded rod, screwing and pulling, and putting small quantities of black powder under the nipple, the jammed rag shot out!

Glad its all out!
Thanks for the tips everyone, they all really helped!

You forgot the pix... do it again... for the pix. :D

You could do what i did when i rammed a ball all the way down and realized i didn't put and powder in lol. I just slowly and carfully put powder through the nipple area (i removed the nipple) and was able to fix several grains of powder in, which was just enough to plop the ball out about 10 feet of so. It wasn't the last time that is did that. I have a bullet puller and have used it, but the other way is more fun and probably takes about the same amount of time.

edit- i guess im a little late :)
