It seems like the threads on a standard arrow is 8/32 wich is the same as a 8/32 cleaning brush or jag....
anyways the rods i have for a pistol only goes to about 12 inches and i need one to go about 20 inches, i have fashioned a old carbon fiber arrow that is just about small enough to pass thru our 308 15 inch barrel. only quesion i have is, is this a good idea or should i just go buy a actual cleaning rod?
im a super cheap guy lol but i did a pass thru with a plain patch with a tip that has the slot to hold a patch, its not a jag. it seems to work but the rod has very little wiggle room, if i was to do cleaning and barrel break in should i go from chamber and out the barrel then remove the jag/brush or should i pull the jag/brush back thru?
how hard should it be to push a jag/brush thru a barrel? as for brushes they should reform to a barrel but a jag dosnt... for 308 do i just buy the jags and brushes labled for 30cal?
brass vs carbon fiber cleaning rods?

Stainless steel one-piece cleaning rod with a ball-bearing handle.
I like Kleen-Bore rods.

.30 cal = .308" bullets and cleaning equipment.

Jags work with patches, and are tight until the patch breaks in to the rifling.

Always clean from breach to muzzle.

Use a bore guide to center the rod.

Push or pull doesn't matter, as long as you use a good joint-less rod and a bore guide.

I would forget trying to make an arrow shaft cleaning rod.
If the brush or jag pulls out and gets stuck in the bore, you will see why it was a bad idea and didn't save you any money very quickly.

im cleaning a tc encore pistol not a bolt action... would i still need a bore guide?
having a one piece 20 inch brass rod 8/32 threads made for a cleaning rod, the brass rods we have for a takedown cleaning rod for pistols dont extend long enough

If you have a cleaning rod rubbing on the muzzle of a rifled firearm.... Use a bore guide.

People buy brass and aluminum rods thinking the softer rod will be easier on the gun.
The exact opposite is true.
The softer brass or aluminum allows grit to embed into the rod and this actually laps the muzzle, ruining it.

The best rods for any gun are one-piece stainless steel, or the new one-piece carbon fiber.
Many Match shooters are using carbon fiber now for one reason. Either the rod is perfectly straight, or it's broken.

So, buy a one-piece stainless or carbon fiber rod and a brass cone-shaped muzzle guide if you're cleaning from the muzzle end.

i plan to clean from breech to muzzle and everytime i push a brush or jag thru i plan to screw it off before removing the cleaning rod
i think i should be fine with just the brass rod were going to make.

i plan to screw it off before removing the cleaning rod
Thats pretty much a waste of time.

Especially with a jag, after the patch falls off.

But a bronze bore brush is too soft to harm the barrel, no matter if you push & pull it through the bore ten thousand times.

It's the cleaning rod itself that can actually damage the bore if it is coated with grit & grime.

Better to spend your time wiping the rod off each pass then unscrewing the tip each pass.

I got 2 Win. cleaning kits- one for rifle other for my shotgun, and my Mosin Nagant has a 28'' barrel and one rod set up with the 3 piece rod is to short so i take one other rod section from the shotgun kit and it works, the things are $5 each. Hope this helps.

Why do you new guys to the THR forum want to come and ask a question about something, and when advised about your inquiry, want to argue about it? Go get the proper equipment needed, do the job right the first time, and spend the time cleaning the firearm right, instead of grousing those that are trying to help you! Just my .02 worth.

why do you "PRO" firearms handlers have such a attitude twards us who dont have the money to make mistakes or have it all to play around with our stuff 24/7, im those who be extra careful over somtin you types would be able to just get it fixed and can afford it all or just dont care about ruining something id freak out over. my whole life i never really had nice things never had the fancies and never had ppl take care of them enough. look at the econemy were in and the economy you older ppl made for us, the fresh generation of ppl, and come back and tell me that again. tell me i can just go to college and get a job right after and work for cash and buy wat i want, look at how ppl are doing fresh out of college and such and tell me its still like it is a few years back

just my .02 worth
