Any ideas? I've got a parked gun that rusted many moons ago, and it's still slightly brownish-gray and spotty in places where it was the worst. The rust hasn't progressed at all, but I just can't get rid of it. Tried a few cleaning products, and scrubbing with an old bronze bore brush (followed by a thorough scrubbing with copper remover to get rid of the bronze residue; still brown). I really don't want to try steel wool or anything else that'll destroy the parkerizing.

May just have it commercially refinished later. Anyone know of any good, reasonably priced places that'll bead blast, re-parkerize, and then apply a bake-on finish? I hate having guns that I need to wipe down every time I touch them.

If you use very fine steel wool dipped in oil & take things easy, then you wont remove the parkerising & it will end up with a satin finish.
A friend of mine discovered this when trying to remove a smear of bedding compound from his 300RUM barrel & ended up doing all of the barrel & action - looked good too.

Can't hurt to try it, if the alternative is a refinish.

If the gun is carbon steel it needs to be wiped down every time it's touched. A proper parkerized finish should hold enough oil to prevent rust from handling but you have to keep it oily. If you can't stand the feel of an oily gun then buy stainless or have it painted like you said. Be aware stainless will rust and the paint will wear off.
