Normally I clean my guns after every shooting session, however brief.

Don't know if this is a good idea with a Ruger 10/22.

Field stripping is easy enough, but I'm wondering if removing and reinstalling the steel stock bolt, trigger assembly pins and recoil pin in an aluminum receiver after every visit to the range is a good idea.

I don't need to break down the gun to clean the barrel, as I always use a pull through for that job.

My question is: how many rounds (not the cheap, really dirty stuff) of crud can a Ruger receiver take on average before it has to be cleaned? 500?

I've been cleaning mine after 100-150, or even less, rounds. Am I subjecting the rifle to too much wear and tear?

Cleaning the 10/22 does not require a detail strip.

I detail stripped my 10/22 once in 20 years, and it didn't "need" it.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm sorry I didn't make my post clearer.

It's not a detail strip I'm thinking of. Just a field strip.

I'm just wondering for example how many times the stock screw can be removed and replaced in the receiver before the aluminum threads are buggered.

I clean mine after pretty much every range session these days because I learned that if I let it go it got pretty gunked up and I had jams and misfires. Of course, that's using cheap brick ammo which is prone to both jams and misfires anyway. Never had that kind of trouble using CCI stingers, just the cheap bulk stuff. BTW, a range session for me is typically 150 to 300 rounds, and a cleaning generally doesn't require a total field strip of the gun. I do a total cleaning once or twice a year unless I'm having malfunctions that aren't solved with a quick cleaning or change of ammo. The usual quick cleaning usually just takes about 10 or 15 minutes.

Removing the pins is no big deal as they aren't tight fitting or really load bearing to begin with.
I've not had any problems with the action screw, but it probably isn't a big deal either.
I used to spend a lot of time on the rimfirecentral forums and had never heard of anyone stripping the action threads.

If you think it might not be good for the aluminum then don't strip it down that far.
Just get yourself an Otis cable cleaning kit or other pull through style cleaning system for the bore.
Then just wipe the bolt face and whatever else you can reach with CLP to clean it.
That's all the 10/22 really needs IMO. The bolt face, breech face, and the front of the action seem to be the dirtiest spots.
I usually just clean those spots and do a more thorough cleaning every 4 or 5 cleanings.

After every 1500 rnds or so I clean the inside of the receiver and bolt. I don't worry so much about the wear associated with taking it apart/putting it back together, but I do use a torque wrench to assure my assembly screw to the stock is at the proper in/lbs. (in my case I found 22 in/lbs perfect).
