Hi all,

I've read many informative posts on how to properly clean a shotgun, but after the gun is clean, I assume you have to clean the tools you were using, right? I'm talking about the bore brush, bore mop... anything else? How should you clean your cleaning tools after cleaning your shotgun? Thanks!

Chris

3 tools

I use a grand total of three tools on my shotgun.

First, I run a boresnake down the barrels. (The Boresnake is my #1 favorite cleaning tool of all time. This is one product that's *better* than advertised.)
Second, I'll clean up the nooks and crevices in the action with a toothbrush.
Third, I wipe everything down with a rag and maybe a little oil.

The boresnake shows no signs of getting too dirty to do its job. At less than $20 and more than 2 years so far, I imagine I'll just dump it and buy a new one once it's too dirty. The rag and toothbrush will eventually get chucked out and replaced.

No patches/brushes/swabs/rods needed.

PS: I suppose I also use the toothbrush and some CLP on the chokes once in a while. But really, not that often.

Cleaning rod attached to my cordless drill.

One time down the barrel with a brass brush.

One time down the barrel with a patch on a different brass brush with solvent on it.

One time down the barrel with a clean patch on a third brass brush to mop everything up.

Couple sprays down the barrel with some RemOil.

I use a rag and clean around the chamber area and oil out all the metal.

On my O/Us, I use some grease on the hinges and assembly areas.

You could eat off my guns they're so clean. :D

I dunno, Two Quarters in a Self Service Car Wash seemed to clean out a 870, clear the bore of Mud just fine - ATF to lube and it felled ducks for the evening shoot...

Ya'll serious about this gun cleaning ain'tcha?

Cleaning Guns

I use the same process as Chilly W. It's great. 3 Steps.

1.) Boresnake

2.) Tooth Brush

3.) Wipe down with shirt, WD-40, then Oil Protectant.

That's it. I don't use degreaser and all that other stuff.

Man, I've spent too much time shooting HP rifle. I usually use a nylon brush to loosen the plastic wadding, then a patch to remove the plastic from the barrel. After it's cleaned, a patch with FP-10 is passed through to protect the tube.

My Win '97 barrel interior was so pitted that I sandblasted and parkerized the barrel interior. I know 870's don't need a lot of maintenance, but a little following a day's shooting doesn't take much time.

This thread reminded me of when I bought my new Mossberg. All the instructions say to give a thorough cleaning before shooting, to clean out all the shipping oils and dust bunnies and things. I just wiped things down, and used a silicone cloth on the exterior.

How much different should that cleaning be, than an "after-shooting" cleaning?
