This will be my first year deer hunting. I need advice on which climbing stand to purchase. My limit is about 350 to 400 dollars. Im 6'3' and 225lbs, 24 years old and plenty strong. What do you guys recommend?
I just bought the Vyper Ultra from Cabela's. I set it up and played with it today. $229.00. 300lb capacity. I like it. It's easy to use, and very comfy to sit in. If you have a Cabela's around, try to stop by. They have about 60 different stands on display !
Summit makes great stands. I've got two of their first climbers (one has the original Trebark camo seat and the other has the original Realtree camo seat). Their great, but the all steel construction makes them heavy. I'm sure the newer ones are much lighter. I'm in the market for a new climber myself, so I'll be following this one closely.
Anything witht the name Summit on it is the way to go. They are the strongest and easiest stands on the market. Get the Goliath as it is the same as the Viper just about 3 inches wider which adds to the comfort level. Easy to set up and carry.
Whatever stand you get, buy a quality lineman's style harness. About 1 out of 3 tree stand hunters fall out of their stand. You can get killed or seriously injured if you are not wearing a proper harness that goes over your shoulders, around your waist, and through your crotch.
Most tree stands come which cheap "harnesses" which are simply a single strap that goes around your chest. These are very dangerous, as you the strap can ride up and under your arms, or you can tip over and fall out the top -- which can result in crippling injury or death.
The Summit Vyper came with the full harness and an Arm that you screw into the tree for hanging your bow or resting your gun etc.. It's 21 pounds and made of Powder Coated Aluminum.
