Spent the past ten years with a pvs27 nv clip on.
May get to spend the next ten with this clipIR-ELR

It’s a bit much for this 18” 223 as it can see a lot farther than the <500yrds I am comfortable shooting this rifle. It will mostly live on the bolt guns but It will be a few weeks before I have time to get them dirty again.

sadly, my mountain range has been in the clouds every time I’ve tried to shoot and I haven’t put enough heat on my steel plates to burn through the fog. I’ll try to post some through scope pics at distance soon.

Link to rumble video I took of the local fireworks display tonight. 0.70 miles away through rain and fog. There are trees between me and the fireworks that are out of focus which causes sort of a veiny look. And two power lines. Video was taken by holding my iPhone in front of a leupold compact spotter at 12x.

Funny how many batteries I have on rifles these days.
Thermal
Laser range finder
Illuminated reticles
Video camera
White light
IR laser
Red dot

We’ve come a long way. When I joined thr the consensus was batteries don’t belong on a duty rifle.

I would love to have a clip on IR for some night coyote and armadillo hunting. That would be so much fun, I love being in the woods at night. But alas Tennessee hunting regulations do not allow it...

yeah
View attachment 1125406 Not my cup of tea as both seem a bit over the top but that’s just my opinion.
it is a bit much, but if there's an easier way to shoot practically, be it close or far, large or small, i'm all ears. ultimately, you have to be able to find it, and figure out how far away it is. in the day, i use a handheld lrf. but at night that doesn't work.

Two things that are problems for my situation, that costs $13,545, and weighs 2.3lbs.

Cost, well it falls into the glad you can afford it, really am, as it's cool to see technological advancements hit consumers. But reality is that is a large investment, probably best for those who are used to spending $2,000+ on scopes. I'm not there yet, and in all reality probably never will be, and that's alright.

I do like the idea of being able to move IR from firearm to firearm and utilize the already purchased scope. I could see myself going this route if cheaper options become available that are consumer priced and worthy.

The weight is problematic for a stalking rifle, but if one is utilizing a acra-mount with tripod it wouldn't be much of a concern.

that’s the shorter ranged clipIR. I prob should have bought it instead because it has a wider field of view compared to the ELR. It prob would have been a bit more practical but I wanted the higher magnification support.
Edit: and it’s pricey but cost less than a bass boat, camper, and lots of other highly discretionary recreational items or vacations etc. most people could afford it if their priorities were different.

me too. I’d never use a dedicated thermal scope on a rifle. Lots of people do but I don’t really understand why. Maybe they only hunt pigs/coyotes at night or something

@taliv do you do any precision multigun at night?
Sadly I haven’t hosted matches in several years but I shoot at night a lot for sure. Carbine pistol and bolt gun

I’ll share more pics later but this was my first outing with the new stuff on the bolt gun a few days ago. Pic without thermal and pic with thermal. Silhouettes are at 415 yards. This was during the day but basically similar image at night.

I was able to first round hit the 3” bad guy head behind the white hostage on the left even though you can’t distinguish between white and black paint through the thermal. I just knew how far up to hold on what looked like the head lol. And hitting the 6” black plate in front of the full size silhouette was easy. But I put a jug of ice water over the right shoulder of the full size ipsc and I fooled me twice. The cold made the steel look just like the jug and so I shot low into the shoulder. The jug leaked and caused the left side of target to get cold so that’s why it looks the way it does in the thermal pic.
