does leaving ammo in the clips of my colt 45 government cause the springs to weaken? i keep some loaded clips in my gun safe and didnt know if that would hurt them or not.

Generally no, magazines can be left loaded indefinately and still work fine.

I know this is nit-picking but the ammunition feed device for a 1911 type pistol is a 'box magazine' not a 'clip'.

I learned from a ex-MP that when you leave ammo in a clip* for a long time, the ammo somehow get's used to it's shape in the clip* so when you pull the trigger, you might get nothing but a empty click. That ain't good.

Or magazine.

I have magazines that have been continuously loaded for 15 years that work fine.

However, I've been educated that magazine springs can compress over time ("weaken") and that they should be replaced after some period. Usually expressed in years. Replacement springs are easy to find for common applications.

From posts and writings by metallurgists, the common thinking (with modern metals) is that it's the repeated compression and releasing of springs that wear them out, not long term compression.

its the loading/unloading of the magazine spring that causes wear, not the static state of the spring, whether the spring is compressed or uncompressed.

Technically, a clip has its own specific definition. I think someone on here said a clip feeds rounds into a magazine, a magazine feeds rounds into the gun.

When I insert a magazine, I sometimes get a couple clicks, but not a clip. Next thing you know the movie sound guys will be redoing their gun sounds. Some of the noisiest handling guns around are in the movies.

Love how guns all make cocking sounds when pointed at someone in the movies. Nothing moves on the gun, but it makes a 'click' just getting pointed.
So, based on this assessment
