I have a 3-9x scope on my deer gun.

I missed a 30yrd shot because it was a boradside running deer. I was set up for a long shot covering a whole cornfield, scope was powered to 9. I was sitting, my shooting elbow and back were against the fence I stabilized myself against, ready to cover everything to my left.

Of course the deer then come out along the fence line I was sitting against, unable to turn toward them. I could of shot them on the left side after they passed, but I didn't know if that property was legal.

There are more than a few things I could of changed here to of been able to take the shot.

But my question here is...

Is there some sort of back up sight I can add to my shooting system to use in close quarters.

A lot of 'tactical' scopes feature a tiny picatinny rail so you can mount a reflex/red dot sight like Burris' Fast Fire at a 45 degree angle for close in shooting. I imagine you could get scope rings that feature that mounting feature.

I recall a few years back asking about off setting irons on my bolt rifle and being scoffed at.. now it's standard on tactical rifles!

The other option is leave your scope on 3x UNTIL you have a reason to dial it up. Even when antelope hunting. The idea is at distance you'll have TIME to do a quick dial up, but if it's really close in you will never have time to dial down.
