I know it may be heresy to 30-06 purists, but I was wondering if CMP ever sells M1's or 1903's that have been convertedor rebarreled to .308? I'd like to add a Garand but don't want to add another caliber (30-06). I know that S/A sells M1's and M14's in .308, but CMP rifles have historic value (which may be lost when converted to .308) and are generally much cheaper. Thanks.

No. They had some Navy 7.62 M1s, but those were auctioned for big bucks.

Best bet for you is to get a rack grade M1 and have it converted with a new 7.62 barrel. There are quite a few gunsmiths who can do this for you. A search will turn up a lot of info on it.

CMP sells rifles directly out of the Army inventory. Which emans, while there are a few 7.62mm M1's that get auctioned off every now and then, no there aren't.

If you want cheaper than a new SA, get a Dane less wood and send it off to an M1 'smith. http://www.dgrguns.com/ seems to be one that is highly reccomended, $265 or so for the gun and between $755 and $855 depending on the new stock, and you will have something that will kick the socks off a new SA M1 for less than the SA.
