CMP out of Service Grade M1s (again)

thats why I jumped and got a garand while I still could, even though I could only afford a racker.

They have plenty of service grade barreled receivers. SG barrelled receiver + rack grade rifle + (parts switching + headspace gauge) = service grade rifle.

I snoozed and losed. Filled out the order form and got everything squared away for a service grade over the weekend, and put my order in the mailbox this morning. I checked CMP's site a few hours later and saw that they were sold out. Called em and CMP isn't sure what will happen. I guess we'll see how it shakes out.

Same here! I even called them this morning around 7:30 Central and the lady I spoke with said "Yep, we still got em" - not her fault that a couple of hours later they stop taking orders for Service Grade.

I'm guessing that when they get my order in the mail, they'll notify me that they are no longer available - unless this alleged 50K of new stock is worked into the inventory by then. I'm assuming they'll offer to change my order to a field or rack grade.

Speaking of the 50K of supposed new inventory, is this for real? I'm not trying to imply the information is wrong, but is this common for CMP to temporarily suspend sales of various grades?

Is a Field Grade ok? I'm planning on shooting it and I want it to be relatively accurate. I don't plan on wearing it out as I'd only be putting a few hundred rounds per year through it.

Boy, I hope they still have plenty of the Greek rifles - grade doesn't matter, my wife is Greek and wants one something fierce. :D

That is how they usually operate. Once they run out of availble rifles in a particular grade, they will stop take orders for a while. When they have checked and graded enough rifles to fill all the backorders and build up a reasonable supply (so they don't sell out again immediately), they will start taking orders again.

I received a rack grade M-1 yesterday. Put in the paperwork two weeks ago!
The furiture does not match but the weapon appears to be in good shape.
I plan to spend some time in Huntsville after Christmas working with CMP and I was told that I could change everything except the receiver out. Will keep you posted.

Mine came with lots of genuine Greek grime and soot but cleaned up nicely. Service grade HRA made in '54. I've shot two-inch groups at 100 yards with it more than once. Stop wasting time, Third. Do it. Do it now.

If you can manage a trip to one of the stores, I would recommend it. You can use the bore tools and light to find a field or rack grade that has a decent barrel. You can also take your pick of different serial numbers.

My Dad and I did that. We were able to stop by the Shiloh battlefield on the way. I heard there was a Hank Williams muzeum in southern AL, but I didn't hear about that until later.

The CMP store also had some correct and collector's grade rifles out there. They weren't cheap though.

I picked up some Greek ammo as well. It was neat seeing all those crates of ammo stacked up out back when I went around to pick it up.

Also, the people working there were all real nice. The other customers were also but it seemed that most were local. Not a single comment despite wearing all maroon Texas A&M shirts the whole time while in AL.

CMP also sells new barrels and stocks if you want to buy a rack and upgrade it.

Got my Correct grade a few months ago and just ordered a Service Grade. My order went into the mailbox about four days before the website called them sold out. I'm hoping my order was accepted but haven't heard from them either way. So I'm checking my account at the estore daily.

On the CMP forum Orest mentioned they would be accepting mail orders for the service grades till Monday ( I think that means this coming Monday) and by then figured there would be 400-500 on their waiting list. When they made the announcement of the srvice grades I sent in an order figuring the wait for the rifles would be somewhere near the 90-120 days they mentioned in the ad, but it seems a LOT of guys are getting the rifle within weeks. My order (for 4) showed up on the e-store the same day they showed sold out on the sales page. I don't know if I'll be one of the guys getting the rifles within days or the longer timeframe, but I'm anxiously waiting all the same!! I sent my order in snail mail about 2 weeks ago. I know the hardcore guys order with FexEx overnight service...guaranteed to get there by 8:00 a.m. the next morning!!

How much is a barreled receiver? And the barrel may be borderline SG. The equation I like is:
rack grade rifle + send it to get a new barrel installed = service grade rifle.

Plus, you can get the new barrel in .30-'06 or .308. I don't know if there are other possibilities, .260 Rem (aka 6.5-08, aka 6.5x51) might be nice.

Of course, IMHO, the first Garand should be kept in .30-'06, the "real" cartridge for the gun.

Regards.

The barrelled reveivers are $300, service grade (which for the two Greek buy backs I got means "like new").
You used to be able to get a parts kit (all except receiver and barrel) for $200.
So you could be into a great Garand for a bit over $500 (with shipping and such).
About the same as fully functioning Garand from CMP.
I'm thinking about gettting a barreled reveiver just to keep around as a spare.
