I am about to buy an M-1. Does anyone have pictures of M-1's from the CMP that they have bought. I am torn between a Service Grade and a Special Grade. What do you recommend? I like the idea of the Special Grade because of the new barrel and stock. However, if I hand-pick, can I find Service Grades that have barrels and stocks that rival those of the Special Grades? Please post any pics that might help show the differences between the two kinds. Thanks.

if you can hand pic id get the service grade (i did, and hand picked 2)

if not i might go the special.

heres some old pics (couple years ago) sa service grades.

we found 2 service grades at the south store with very good barrels. mw around 1 and t.e. around 2-3.

fantastic shooters.

Special Grades have commercial wood, commercial barrel and possibly other commercial parts.
Personnaly I would go with the Service garde and put a note with the order asking for one with a USGI stock as some ship with commercial wood.
Just my opinion, go with Service grade

I don't think you can go wrong with either, especially if you handpick.

If you just want one to have, plink with, and compete for fun, I'd probably go for a Service Grade. It will be a great way to start your collection. An SA SG will likely be my next M1.

Be aware that you may have to do some work on a new stock (which may come on a Service Grade) to make the rifle a bit more precise.

Not to derail the thread but what about Field Grade?

Field Grades can be great. I was able to hand pick one that I am very happy with. It isn't as pretty as the Service and Specials though! If people can go to the store, they are worth a look.

For the price difference between Field and Service, if I had to mail order, I'd go with the Service.
