CMP + USA Freedom Corps (comments please?))

Hey everyone,
I seek the sage wisdom of this forum. Since 9-11 the Prez. has been pushing for volunteer service in many areas. The one area lacking is Firearm Instruction on a National scale, (surprise).
As I understand it the Civilian Marksmanship Program began as the Director of Civilian Marksmanship and was initiated in order to have a Trained Civilian Population in case the need ever arose for Riflemen and women.
I understand that the CMP already has excellent marksmanship programs, especially for youth. But I think that a marriage between the various federal volunteer programs and the CMP or the NRA would better train our civilian population, enhance the security of our country and most of all put firearm ownership in it's proper perspective NATIONALLY, as the ultimate defense against any threat from within or without.

I doubt it will fly.

The Dems want to ban guns and the GOP only cares about giving tax cuts to the rich.

THE CMP should again become the DCM so that it will be better funded. K-12 schools should be required to teach marksmanship and all states should pass shall issue laws for CCW.

It's already being done. Unless you want the government to hand over a couple of million where it can help to lower prices back to the 65 dollars for a M1.

Here's the real problem. The range that I go to runs CMP training every time they get enough people to do it. The trouble is no one wants to do it that much. It's not just the price of the guns or the ammo. It's trying to motivate people to learn to shoot.
It would be hard enough to convince people on this board to go out and get at least an Expert rating in High Power Rifle.

I'll step up to the plate and buy an M1 if someone can convince me that it is still a good choice for a defensive weapon. I have a Ruger M77 w/Leupold scope and don't see how another rifle will better serve.

I'm not saying this is a bad idea, but I think the program would be more interesting if folks could use a rifle they already own. Of course, I could take this as a direct order to buy a new gun...

Just had to point out that although the Garand is still a quite adequate Battle rifle, that isn't why you should buy one. When you buy a Garand you are buying a classic piece of history. More than worth the money and effort required IMHO.

CMP is my friend

Garands, M1903's, it's all good. It's an honor for me to own these peices of history... and that they are great shooters is just and added bonus.

I have 2 Garands and want a third so I can stack them in my living room -coffee table books are boring conversation pieces.
