Gun control measures don't stop violence
By Robert A. Levy, Special to CNN
January 18, 2011 6:01 p.m. EST

STORY HIGHLIGHTS:

* Robert Levy: Any controls on guns must not impede the use of firearms for self-defense
* Levy: No conclusive evidence found that restrictions reduce gun-related crimes
* Gun laws do not stop drug abuse, dysfunctional schools, mental instability, Levy says

... Still, the Supreme Court has suggested that sensible gun regulations may be constitutionally permissible. Sensible is not, however, what we have in Washington, Chicago, New York and other cities, where you can probably get a pizza delivery before a response from a 911 call. Police cannot be everywhere.

... In 2004, the National Academy of Sciences reviewed 253 journal articles, 99 books and 43 government publications evaluating 80 gun-control measures. Researchers could not identify a single regulation that reduced violent crime, suicide or accidents. A year earlier, the Centers for Disease Control reported on ammunition bans, restrictions on acquisition, waiting periods, registration, licensing, child access prevention and zero tolerance laws. CDC's conclusion: There was no conclusive evidence that the laws reduced gun violence.

Read this at work, interesting read, comments where even better. There is also one from Mrs. McCarthy that was a letter written to Obama to step it up on gun control, which warranted many a laugh, and of course, the comments where ALSO priceless :)

If the laws we had where enforced better (no easy task!) and the public was educated, I think we'd see a drastic reduction in firearm violence.

Gun Control doesn't work because we are protected by Ex Post Facto laws which means everything prior to the ban is exempt from it's rulings. This was the case with the AWB, and will be for any future cases too. IF, and that is a huge IF, guns did indeed cause problems, nothing short of total removal of every single firearm in existence would solve the problem, and good luck with that! Gun Control just punishes those of us who participate lawfully in shooting sports to control criminals, who by definition ignore law.
