going on an arsenal AK47. which do you prefer and why? pros and cons? thanks

if i get the aimpoint ill get the ultimaks

if i use the eotech then im not sure if i want to use the kvar side rail or get the midwest industries handrail. Also has anyone besides nutinfancy found the midwest rail to harm accuracy ?

I don't think you can get a co-witness with the kvar side mount. there is a new side mount that will co-witness called the RS AKSM 30mm scope mount.
The military arms channel on youtube reviewed the MI rail and said no problem with accuracy.

get the ultimak mount and put an Aimpoint M2 on with factory ring, you won't be sorry. I put an Aimpoint m2 2x with the 2MOA dot on a preban FEG lurking in the back of my safe (had a M2 1x on Ultimak for 5 years and it is the bomb) and it looks like it gets all you can get out of a GOOD AK to 300 yards or so. The 1x is better for inside 150 yards though.

Last year I got to attend an AK operators class taught by Ken Hackathorn who is probably one of the best instructors in the country. Of the 12 students and Ken there were only 2 AKs not mounting an Ultimak/H1 combo. Mine which had only iron sights and another student who had an Ultimak with a Vortex SPARC.

In other words that combo just works.

midwest now has an optic specific rail that allows co-sight with the aimpoint

I have the Ultimak with a Primary Arms micro red dot -- I like the setup enough that if the cheap red dot dies I'll spring for an Aimpoint micro.

I'd go with the Aimpoint/Ultimak combo. I really like Eotechs, but on the AK they're less practical than on AR's because on an AK there is no way that an Eotech can cowitness.

I currently run a Kobra on a siderail mount on my AK, but if I had it to do over again (and could afford it), I'd go Aimpoint/Ultimak instead. Siderail mounted optics bulk up the rifle and sit too high for a good cheek weld; they are usable and are often the least expensive choice---which is why I went with a Kobra---but the cowitnessed Aimpoint is a better setup overall, I think.

Since Ultimak/T1 has already been discussed let me point out that the Eotech+side rail mount will sit very high. So much so that cheek weld will be compromised. It will not cowitness either. You should not run an Eotech on the Ultimak-gets cooked.

is the aimpoint r1 the same as the t1 minus the night vision capability?

No. The H-1 is the one you are thinking of. The R-1 is the civilian model. Stainles finish. They are OOP I believe.

you can also get the tws dog leg scope rail which will give you a co witness. google texas weapon systems & it should come up. they also sell a reer peep sight that goes on the back of the rail. i have yet to find out if you can put a 3x magnifier behind it, but it does looks like you could. their is also a review of this on the military arms channel.

that texas mount seems nice, i really like the peep site you can add on. I wonder how well it will hold up?

i think im going to get one if i do i will make sure i post the results. someone on the akfiles forum might have more info now though.
