Hello

I am looking for a fixed blade carry knife. I recently had the chance to hold a cold steel master tanto at a gun show. What I liked about the knife was that it wants too large and it was light.

Does anyone currently own the same knife? What are your impressions? How well does it hold and edge?

I find Tantos to be nice knives, good for combat of the most serious kind.

But a good old K Bar with a strong leather grip is just fine. A Tanto is just a little too much knife IMHO. But I like them. You need to be careful when buying a Tanto. If I remember correctly there is a method where layers of metal is used in making these things and much better than what I would consider a stamped kitchen knife from wally world.

You'll end up putting it on the shelf (not that I don't have drawers full and shelves laden with knives). It just isn't a carry piece.

Look at your state laws and find out if there's any blade length limitations so that you're less likely for violating the law.

Consider what you want to do with it. If it is just a SD knife then there's not much of a problem about sharpening or edge holding since you don't use a dedicated SD knife for anything else. If it is going to be a daily user then decide what you'll be using it on before settling on a particular knife. Some do better for some choirs than others.

It would be good if you told us what you want to use the knife for.

I recently had the chance to hold a cold steel master tanto at a gun show.

The 7.5" blade version is a very stout knife. Cold Steel has used AUS-8 or VG-1 as steels, both of which are excellent knife steels.

The point design is very strong. And it pierces things well. I don't like the pointed pommel end. If you fall on the thing, it will give you one heck of a dig in the ribs. I would have preferred a flat pommel end, AKA Kabar, which is far more useful as a tool.

i've carried ALOT of fixed blades. what i've found is - about a 4.5" blade 9.5" overall is about the biggest knife i'm gonna carry full time, comfortably. your results might vary (bases on YOUR size), but it's something to think about. i have tantos, in a drawer, at home.

I am very satisfied with every Cold Steel product I own. I use my equipment hard and have never had any falures. Lots of people disagree with me, tho. I have heard great things about their tantos, and if thats what you want, go for it!:)

Master Hunter

I bought this like new Cold Steel Master Hunter at a gunshow yesterday, except the sheath isn't original.
