Is the desk just that? A desk with no partition? If so, what's a lock on the side door going to accomplish?

i see it more clearly now. I was under the impression that when the person walked around the side and opened the door it was referring to the receptionist area being in a closed room (my campus actually has a set up like that oddly enough.)

Gun him down! If the drunk doesn't have enough money to use a pay phone he doesn't deserve to live!

Just kidding of course. I think one of the best things about a job like this is learning how to deal with people even ones who don't do what you tell them.

Lets back up here and look at the circumstances. This is a just a loud, drunk, idiot college kid who didn't have $.35 for a phone call. Maybe you could give the guy a break let him make his little local phone call and avoid all of this conflict in the first place. Most of the time the outcome of these situations completely depend on how you conduct yourself.

If he truly is a threat OC spray in the face is nothing more than an accelerant for many aggressive drunks or serious combatants.

While it would be fun to douse this idiot in OC spray then go to work on him with a steel pipe. I'm thinking this is one for clearer thinking.

Sorry but my threat meter is just not hitting red on this one.

Yeah, my university was like that as well: sort of a small room with a giant window (sans glass). Thee was one side door that locked, and the window itself had one of those roll up/down security barriers when the front desk was off hours. Course, the barrier is useless during business hours, since all a person has to do to access the room is jump over the desk. :uhoh:

That's how the main desk is. Not the night desk though since by nature it has to be near the door.

And the drunk guy did indeed go around the desk to the door of the *main* desk...

Does your school have a police department? Drunks are a favorite of university police officers here in Georgia. LOTS of drunks go to jail everyday around here. Everything from Public Drunk, Disorderly Conduct, Underage Consumption, etc.

We are talking about using a school telephone right? It would seem that altercation need not be neccessary.

Got a great idea for you. Move the phone out of sight after 10 PM. That way if Waldo stumbles in half blotto and asks to use the phone point to the pay phone and say, "There it is buddy". Then while he's fumbling for the door you phone campus "50" and have them come and put him away for the evening.
No threats. No worries. Seems like if you're smarter than the drunk they go away. Confront one and its "party time" with a chair crashing through the glass partition into your face.

I was always told there were a lot of drunk students at that school in East Lansing but on the other hand you got all the pretty girls :) LOL

The public phone isn't even a pay phone, that's the annoying part!

Though on the idea of hiding the phone, one of my supervisors does put it under the table when he's on shift, so you may have a point there...
