My collet puller is older than the hills (Herter's -- Waseca, Minn.) and was probably bought in the '60's.

Problem is that while it pulls the bullets fine, it leaves them stuck in the collet. I have to reach in with a pair of duck bill pliers to grab and extract the bullet. Tapping the puller dosen't work.

Do modern day collet type pullers just drop the bullet when the tension is released? If so, is there a "best" brand?

Yes, they spring open far enough to release the bullet.

Your Herters may have also when it was young & strong.
It was a Model Perfect afterall!

You might be able to "spring" the collet fingers open slightly and see if that helps. Don't overdo it or they might break. But just a little should be all it takes.

I like the Hornady Cam-lock puller best. It uses a simple lever to open/close the collet, consistently every time. Others have to be screwed open and closed, and you have to know or feel how much to close it to grip the bullet. Once you set up the Hornady, it works great every time.
