Colorado gun laws

I just got back from colorado, while I was there I saw a great deal on a rifle but was told I could not purchase it because I was not a resident. How does this work. I have read different posts on here about NJ residents buying guns in PA. I thought out of state people could buy long guns everywhere but the strictest states. Any help is much appreciated.

You can purchase from out of state but it must be sent from that state to a firearms dealer in your home state and the 4472(?) form filled out there and any background check, if required, performed in your home state. Actually, I think neighboring states may allow non-resident purchases which may explain the NJ/PA transfers ( but I may be mistaken in that).
The trail of possession must go from the owner, to an FFL in your state, to you. I think your guy lost a sale because of his ignorance.

You can buy a long gun out of state if the state does not have a lawforbidding out of state residents from buying guns. Out of state long gun purchases are not allowed by New Jersey. That is someone from Pennsylvania cannot buy a long gun in NJ. Someone from NJ can buy a long gun in PA as long as they have a NJ Firearms ID Card. I know of NJ residents buying long guns in NY,DE, MD, and PA but they were always were required to show their NJ FID.

The sale must meet all the requirements to be legal in the state the gun is being purchased in and the buyer's home state. Some states (AZ I think) requires the buyer from a cintiguous state. This is a holdover from the original GCA 68 and they made their state law along te federal lines and never changed it. CT dealers will sell you a long gun but you have to sit out the waiting period (10-15 days ?) to pick it up.

I don't think CO has any such laws forbidding transfer of a long gun to an out of state resident.

You have to be buying the gun from a dealer no private sales to out of state residents.

To buy from a private person in another state the gun has to go through at least one FFL. The seller can bring the gun to a dealer who can transfer the gun to you. The seller can also ship any gun to a FFL in your state to complete the transfer.

Big 5 sports had nagants for 89 dollars and the one I looked at was in real good condition but they wouldnt sell it to me and to transfer it to my home state would have negated any savings after the transfer fees and shipping.

Different states have different laws. There is no longer a Federal ban on interstate F2F sales of rifles or shotguns, but I was recently unable to buy a Stag lower over the counter at AIM Surplus in OH because OH state law forbids sales of rifles/shotguns to anyone not a resident of OH or a contiguous state.
Big as Texas is, it ain't exactly contiguous to OH.
