Sounds like a man I could vote for.

DENVER -- A state legislator who this past session sponsored a bill to ban state services to illegal immigrants will strap on a sidearm and patrol the U.S.-Mexico border during a visit to Arizona that began Monday.

Rep. Dave Schultheis, R-Colorado Springs, who is on a three-day visit to Arizona with two other lawmakers to learn about that state's illegal immigration legislation, will spend two nights along the border with the Minutemen Civil Defense Corps., a group of private citizens who have organized to patrol the border.

"We are not gun-toting cowboys," Schultheis said. "But absolutely I am going to be armed and so will everybody that is in our contingent. This is not a fun-and-games thing when you are dealing with drug traffickers."

At least one other lawmaker called Schultheis' plan grandstanding for publicity.

"I'm not sure what the goal basically is," said Rep. Val Vigil, D-Adams County. "To research legislation, they don't need to go out there and sit up for two nights with a gun strapped to your waist."

The other two legislators on the trip, Reps. Bill Crane, R-Arvada, and Jim Welker, R-Loveland, were also to patrol the border with the group.

Sounds reasonable.

I believe its called bonding with your constituents and learning from first hand experience, instead of pencil pushing Val.
