Hi, all, I have a pietta 1873 clone, I know but i cannt aford a real colt. anyway the pistol in pretty nice, for what it is, My question is will a 3rd gen colt barrel fit this pistol, or do they use a differant pitch thread, i belive it a 24 pitch on it now. I have the 5.5 barrel and want to find a 4.75 colt barrel, if it will fit, Thanks

I don't know a lot about Pietta's barrels, but I have no doubt the threads are metric, so I wouldn't hold out much hope of a Colt barrel fitting.

I think I'd call up EMF or whichever other importer and ask if their gun would take a Colt barrel, and if so, which version; first-second or third generation thread. If not, ask the price of an Eyetalian barrel. It will surely be less than a Colt barrel.

If your only issue with the gun is barrel length, I would run with it as it is until such time as you can pungle up the $ for something you really like. The reason I say that is because swapping barrels will be problematical and some expense; same with getting your present barrel cut to 4 3/4" because the front sight will have to be remounted and the gun quite possibly refinished as well.

Down the line you might want to opt for something closer to your preference in a Uberti/Cimarron. Generally decent quality, decent price. Going up a notch the New Vaquero Rugers are eerily close to the old Colt SAAs in feel and appearance, and will certainly outlast all of us.

'Twas me I'd shoot the fire out of the Pietta, wait my chance to upgrade, sell the Pietta for what you can get and put it towards the new iron.

Pietta barrels are threaded metric 18mm X 1.0mm, nontapered.
I would use it the way it is and shoot the heck out of it. 5 1/2" barrels are not that common anymore and is only 3/4" longer.
