I've got a new Colt model XSE government 1911 and on the hammer there is a burn mark from where it was ground down on the hammer from the factory, is there any way to get this burn mark off of the side of the hammer...
Thanks! drf

Dunno if it's the same thing but I traded a stainless Smith that had been fired plenty. It looked it, too. Lot's of blackened steel.

I used something called Flitz (IIRC) and lots of elbow grease. It looked like new. The dealer I traded it to knew it had been fired, but commented on the fact that it looked so good.

I've written on this and other forums about the cleaning and polishing qualities of Flitz. I used it on a Python Elite's matte stainless and now have a mirror finished bright stainless gun. Another effective compound for cleaning powder burns off the front of stainless cylinders is " Mother's Chrome and Mag Wheel Polish". Wipe it on, let dry, wipe off. No more messing with nylon brushes, etc. Hope this helps. -Asa

Is the rest of the hammer side bright? If so, just run it over a piece of fine emery paper (600-1000 grit). Put the paper on a flat surface and rub the hammer on it; it will look just fine.
