I have a friend that called me and asked about the value of a 1911. His brother gave him a Series 70 Colt 45 ACP 1911. It is new in the box, never fired. Still has the plastic shipping wrap around it, all factory paper work, and the receipt where he bought it new on July 21, 1981. It has been stored for 22 years, and the brother gave it to my friend and told him to shoot it. He was asking me about its worth, and whether he should shoot it or keep it as it. Naturally, I offered him $50.00 for it sight unseen, but he declined . :D

Anyway, he (and I) was wondering just what a pistol like this might really be worth. I am not familiar with collector values for something like this, even if it has any collector value. If it is just worth the same as a new one, he is going to start putting ammo through it.

Thanks for any help.

Wow, a genuine NIB Series 70! I don't know about the collectibility of it, but the Blue Book says it is worth roughly $1,000. (Add another 10% if it has the early 2 piece box).

(Assumptions made by me: blued not nickel, MKIV not Commander, 45ACP. Differences from these would affect the value.)

Mal,

You are correct, I did not put that in the original message. It is blued, and the full size, not Commander.

Thanks for the info. I told him I figured at least $800, but I am not up on the values of Colts by any means. I might try to get him to take a digi pic of it when he gets back to work on Monday.

Thanks again.
