Picked up a nice used 1991 today and put 75 rounds of 225gr lead flat nose with 3.0 gr Bullseye. Accuracy was much better than my skills so no complaint there. Only one case smokestacked; however many rounds ejected shallowly upward, sometimes forward, sometimes in my lap, most just barely to my right side. Does this suggest maybe too strong a recoil spring? Don't know what is in it now, but I do have a wilson 16.5lb avail...just didn''t have time to try it this afternoon. Maybe I should get a 14 lb with the light loads I'm shooting? Or perhaps its simply the extractor that needs tweeking...somthing I'm not equipped to do.

The barrel is an aftermarket of some sort. It has the following on the top at the port: 45 auto 7791193 86 and underneath where the pin is, it has two letters M, and P. Any idea what this is?

Whoever worked on the barrel must have used a course file seeing how rough it it. Nevertheless, it did feed without any problems and it has a Shooting Star mag, the standard diamond wood grips, plastic trigger and mainspring housing. Serial nr is 27494**...if anyone has any idea when it was made?

Went over to 1911 forum and read about how to check extractor: "slip a bullet up under extractor and if it doesn't fall out, etc" . Mine does fall out..has about the space of two bullet rims. Guess i need a new extractor to start with!

Just a verbage thing but, I think you're confusing the ejector with the extractor. There is a problem with the extractor that needs to be addressed. It should be a simple tweek for most gunsmiths.
Your load does sound light. A 14 lb. spring may be in order. 16.5 is appropriate for hardball.

You may not need a new extractor, you just have to bend it to get more tension on it. Take a look at this article by Bill Wilson. You can do a better job if you put it in a vise or jig and bend more evenly from the middle but the Wilson way works.

Questions

Howdy neighbor! I'm just up the road from you, about 15 miles north of W-S.
I can have a look at your Colt if you want. Sounds like your pistol is oversprung for the ammo you're usin'. Headed for Charlotte today, but I'm
free tomorrow most of the day. Come on up and partake of a pot of my notorious Turbocoffee. Hope ya like dogs...

Hey Tuner, I'm gonna be in Charlotte today also. Wish we coult have got togather there. But, yeah, I know where Rural Hall is...at least I've seen the exits off Rt 52. Would love to come up and chat with you. Love critters...got 2 dogs, 6 cats...in the house, if that says something! Cats have a door to come and go which makes it nice. No litter pans. How about sending me your phone nr, or something I can get in touch. My email is [email protected].

Thanks, Ted Clement

3.0 grains of Bullseye and a 225 grain bullet equals a very light load. You probably need to drop down to a 12 or 14 pound recoil spring. The extractor sounds like it has negative tension on the case rim and needs to be adjusted. The barrel sounds like surplus military, quite possibly a chrome lined barrel.

Visit

ulflyer, take Tuner up on his offer! You will meet a great guy and a great lady, some good dogs(my wife fell in love with the Yorkie).
Get there early because the time will really fly by and first thing you know it will be getting late. Amazing how time flies when you are having a good time. :D

Yorkie

Ken...Everybody falls in love with Pepper...and now we've got another addition. Little Bob is a 14 week-old Poodle/Chihuahua/Scotty mutt who thinks he's died and gone to heaven. All the male Collies are scared to death of him, and the female thinks she's got another baby to raise...

Oh yeah! Uniflyer is supposed to be here Monday at 11 unless this snowstorm blows in from the Blue Ridge.

French mixed with Mexican with a strong bit of Scotland!!!

I don't even know how to start describing the personality I'm seeing in my mind for that one. A dog that is too stuck up to stop arguing with itself? Anyway, lots of character.

Stan, slip of the finger above; I load 3.5 Bull, not 3.0 that I said above.

Went up the 1911Tuner's place yesterday and he give my 1991 and Rem-Rand a good going over, checking all the specs, and as suspected the barrel in the 1991 had been buggered up so bad by previous owner it had to be replaced. Tuner had a Springfield stainless barrel that fit real well. He also put in a short trigger and an arched mainspring housing that I liked. Will give it a try this afternoon.

Now, as to the RR, he told me it was such a "dog" I aught to get rid of it and that he'd take it off my hands just cause he's such a nice guy. Told him I'd think about it awhile.

I made good friends with the Collies and Yorkie cause I took them a doggie treat. Fell in love with the little male collie...offered the RR in trade but he wouldn't do it!

And the coffee.........bout 150 proof!

The barrel is a USGI Korean-war period replacement, or a copy of one. If Tuner sees it he will likely be able to tell which. Unfortunately it sounds like someone ruined it. Anyway, hope for the best.

Korean Barrel

Fuff,

The barrel is chrome-lined, and appears to be one of those that were lined after they were found to have oversized bores. IIRC, Smith & Wesson made those, and the chrome lining was a save on the whole lot.

The "smith" who did the "throat job" should be horse-whipped and sentenced to carry Glocks for the rest of his life. :neener:

The Springfield barrel that now resides in the barrel was one of the 4 that
I had previously fitted into a Norinco...and it fell into the Colt like it was meant to be. Two lugs bearing the load in the horizontal plane, with
the third waiting in the wings when the pistol has seen a couple thousand rounds. Zero horizontal play in the slide, and no play in the vertical when the hood is pushed down hard. Firing pin hits ----><---thisclose to center, and
unlock timing is good...with about .015 inch of clearance when the slide passes over the hood.

The more I mess with them there Springfield barrels...the better I like'em.
