I was at an out of state gunshop while heading home on Christmas break and came across 4 3rd model colt derringers in 41 rimfire. Condition of the set ranged from a couple with most of the original finish 70-80% and two with less than 20%. All were clean, not messed with, tight and with good actions and fair to very good bores. I had to do a double look when I saw the price tags ranged from $180 - $250 each.

As the set still represents a sizeable outlay of cash I am proceeding cautiously and placed them on hold. The gunshop, because of store policies would not sell them to me out right, because they claim they cannot prove they were manufactured before 1898. I do not think they know what they are. Before I drop a thousand dollars on the set and transfer to another branch store in my state is there any pitfalls I should be looking into. I am hoping to keep the better of the four and sell the rest to reclaim the purchase price.

Cheapest one currently on gunbroker is over 400. Did you take pics?

I'd venture over to the http://www.coltforum.com/ and ask the experts. There are a lot of copycat single shot derringers out there but in 41 rimfire?

Correction: I have found Eibar made copies on James Julia auctions, but even that had a high auction estimate.

No pictures, but they aren't copies. I am going forward with the transfer, figure at the very least I won't lose anything on the deal and even if I did I have lost more money on dumber things in the past. I will call them early Christmas presents to myself.
