Colt 41 cal

My nephew sent me an e-mail tonight with pictures of a Colt .41 cal revolver a buddy of his is trying to sell him. I will try to post the pictures tomorrow night but does anyone have any ideas of what to check and possible values. I won't state the asking price but I believe it is far more than its worth, but I have little experience in the antique revolver market.

Depends entirely on what model it is. and what condition it's in; Colt made a bunch of different single-actions, and a few double-actions in 41 calibre, so we'd need pictures at the least.

It is a Colt Single Action Army, that's good.
Can't tell much about the condition of the finish in that dark picture, that's bad.
It doesn't appear rusty, though, that's good.
Grips are very worn, that's bad.

Caliber stated to be .41, which was fairly common in the day, but is an old style round originally with heel bullet, now with undersize hollowbase bullet. That's bad if you want to shoot it, or if you have to pay a high price to just have an example. Doesn't matter if you just want one to show and tell and if the price is not too high.

It is my opinion that gun would have an asking price of $2,500+ anywhere you found one for sale.

You just made it a good deal then RC. The owner is asking $2000. I couldn't find much last night online but the ones I found varied from $700 to $10,000. In my e-mail application I can magnify the picture and there are some worn areas on the side of the barrel and along where the patent registration markings are located but given the age I guess that is to be expected. I asked him to get me the S/N so I could try to determine when it was manufactured. Thanks for all the responses so far, like I said, I have little working knowledge of old revolvers.

Keep in mind it's only worth 2 grand or more if you can find a buyer with 2 grand or more to sell it to.

If he buys it, tell him to check out the innards, as that trigger looks like it is too far forward, which probably only means a broken trigger but could indicate a more serious problem. Maybe not a big deal, but maybe the difference between a good deal and an only fair deal.

Hard to advise someone to spend 2 grand on a gun that they have little to no experience with. There are extensive books written on the subject of collecting colt single actions. My advise is to be careful.
