A friend has a colt revolver that we are trying to identify. On it is the following: Colt 41 D.A. patent 3426 September 19th 1871 to January 19th 1875. The serial number is 123425. I called Colt and was told that it should have a model name on it also. I don't remember seeing a name on it and called the owner and he said he didn't see one either. I am going back over to see him tomorrow and take a closer look. I looked on the internet and the only thing I have found that looks like it to me is a model called the Thunderer. Any of you fellows have an idea what it might be? I will check it out again as I said but I thought some of you may have an idea with the description I have given.

With those patent dates it should be a Thunderer. There was an Army special made later, turn of the century or so, those have a swing out cylinder. If your gun has a loading gate on the side like a peacemaker, then it is a Thunderer.

It does have the loading gate as you said. When I called Colt the lady seemed to think it should have had a name/model on it. Did these models not have a name on them and were just called the thunderer verbally with no markings?

All it should say is Colt D.A. .41 on the left side and the Colt address & patent dats on top.

The .32 "Rainmaker", .38 "Lightening", and .41 "Thunderer" were never official Colt names for them.

Yea.

I kind of doubt there is anyone answering the phone at Colt that knows much about what they made back then, other then a quick serial number look-up on their computer.
Which you can do yourself here:

The Colt Historian department would likely want $150 bucks or more to tell you anything.

Yep, and the favorite carry gun of John Wesley Hardin!
